Electric bikes and other mobility devices have become increasingly popular throughout Washington County, especially among young riders. Along with that growth, we’ve seen an increase in reports of unsafe and illegal riding behaviors on public roads, sidewalks, and private property.
To address community concerns, deputies recently conducted a proactive education and enforcement mission in the Bethany area and near Portland Community College’s Rock Creek Campus. During the five-hour mission, deputies contacted approximately 40 juveniles riding various electric mobility devices. Many riders received education and warnings, while some were cited for unsafe or illegal operation.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages parents and guardians to research devices before purchasing them. Not all electric mobility devices are legal for use on public roads, and understanding the differences can help keep riders safe and prevent costly citations.
If you witness dangerous or reckless riding behavior, there are ways to report it and help us address ongoing concerns in your neighborhood.

Bait Bike Mission Leads to 34 Arrests
The Sheriff’s Office recently conducted a bait bike operation focused on reducing theft and identifying repeat offenders involved in property crimes.
During the operation, deputies made 34 arrests while using bicycles strategically placed in areas vulnerable to theft. These missions help investigators identify suspects, recover stolen property, and deter future criminal activity.
Property crime prevention remains a priority, and operations like this are one of many tools used to protect our community.

Drones and K9s Help Deputies Locate Suspects
Technology and specialized teams continue to play an important role in helping deputies safely resolve incidents.
In two recent cases, deputies were assisted by our Drone as First Responder (DFR) program and K9 teams while locating and arresting suspects. These tools provide real-time information to responding deputies, helping improve safety for both the public and law enforcement personnel.
Whether searching for a wanted suspect or responding to a burglary in progress, the combination of trained deputies, K9 teams, and drone technology helps deputies work more efficiently and effectively.

Celebrating 60 Years of Search and Rescue
This year marks 60 years of Washington County Search and Rescue—a program built on service, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.
For six decades, volunteers have answered the call during some of our community’s most challenging moments. They have searched for missing people, assisted with critical investigations, supported families in crisis, and helped countless individuals find their way home safely.
The impact of Search and Rescue extends beyond any single mission. Through mentorship, teamwork, and service, generations of volunteers and cadets have developed skills and values that continue to shape lives long after their time in the program.
As we celebrate this milestone, we extend our sincere gratitude to every volunteer, past and present, who has dedicated their time, talents, and heart to this mission.
