VALENTINE'S EDITION
BLACK ARTISTS IN LOVE
This Valentine’s Day it is fitting that we consider art and love.  There are enumerable works that seek to capture Black love on canvas. Here we are contemplating the love relationships of Black artists.  Imagine the possibilities, the passions, the partnerships, the volatility. I’m sure some stories would make great reality television.

Consider that Elizabeth Catlett’s marriage to Charles White only lasted five years, while she remained married to Mexican painter Francisco Mora for 55 years. Sculptor Augusta Savage was married four times.  Romare Bearden was married to noted dancer and choreographer Nanette Rohan for 34 years.  Below are links to three beautiful stories of Black Art Love.

Happy Valentine’s Day.

TO READ, TO SEE, TO HEAR
Tawny Chatmon, represented by Myrtis Bedolla, owner and founding director of Galerie Myrtis, will be one of the gallery's featured artists at the Venice Biennale this April.  Galerie Myrtis is the first Black-owned gallery to be invited to participate in the Biennale-affiliated exhibition “Personal Structures: Time, Space, and Existence.” The gallery was invited to the prestigious show by the European Cultural Centre-Italy.  The artists in the exhibition are asked to imagine a posthuman condition that challenges the universal ideal of the white male “man of reason.”

Chatmon, whose work you might have seen on the Showtime hit “Billions” last week, which also included photos of Mandela and Stacy Abrahams, is featured in the Washington Post Magazine Magazine.
