February is Black History Month, a federally recognized, nationwide celebration that calls on all Americans to reflect on the notable roles African-Americans have played in shaping U.S. history. CJHS students have fun in Jekyll Island
CJHS 7th and 8th-grade science club students traveled to Jekyll Island this week for the school's annual science club trip to the Georgia 4-H Tidelands Nature Center. Students discovered first-hand the life of Georgia's unique barrier island ecosystems while participating in programs such as beach ecology, herpetology, salt marsh ecology, and more! 
CHS student wins second place in essay contest
CHS student Emma Hudson was the 2nd place winner in the Optimist Club of Carrollton's essay contest. As the second-place winner, she was awarded a certificate and a prize of $100. Emma and the other two winners read their essays at today's meeting. Area middle and high school students were eligible to compete, with this year's Optimist International's theme being, "How Does an Optimistic Mindset Change My Tomorrow?"
Hands-on learning at CUES
Students in Mrs. Rule's science class at CUES spent time examining the class plant tower this week. They measured the height of the tallest tomato plant and measured the length of the longest garden bean. They also counted the number of tomatoes and garden beans that were growing and made observations about the lettuce and chard plants. Some students even got to try some of the vegetables.
Herndon and Rader recognized by Carroll County Chamber of Commerce
Yesterday, the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce recognized local STAR students at its annual STAR Student Breakfast. CHS Senior Andy Herndon was recognized as the district's awardee along with Dr. Laura Rader, whom he selected as his STAR teacher. Andy and Dr. Rader will go on to represent the school system at the state-wide competition.

CHS alum's work on historic project gains national recognition
In this ongoing series, we reach out to CHS alumni to learn what they are doing now that they have the advantage of experience, education and self-reflection. This month’s pick is Amanda Peagler, Class of 2010. Amanda, a research scientist for the Georgia Institute of Technology and its nonprofit arm, Georgia Tech Research Institute, recently received recognition for work to improve the implementation efforts of the free rapid COVID-19 home tests currently under national distribution by the U.S. government.

CHS Athletic Booster Club accepting Hall of Fame nominations

The Carrollton High School Athletic Booster Club is currently accepting nominations for the 2022 class of inductees into the Carrollton Trojan Athletic Hall of Fame.The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to recognize the outstanding athletic achievements of Carrollton High School graduates. Consideration is given to athletic achievement both during high school years and beyond.

CCS Education Foundation offering new scholarship in honor of Ronnie Walton
The Carrollton City Schools Education Foundation recently announced the creation of a new scholarship in memory of a beloved former Carrollton High School teacher. 

The Ronnie Walton Memorial Scholarship honors the life-long educator at Carrollton High School who spent more than thirty years teaching English and creative writing. The scholarship focuses on students who wish to pursue a career in teaching, writing, or other related fields.

There will be a COVID-19 vaccine clinic on Wednesday, Feb. 16. First, second and third doses will be available for all staff, students and Trojan families.
