Celebrating Brain Awareness Every Day
When I started my consulting business more than a decade ago, I was energized by the research papers I was reading from the new discipline of neuroscience and stunned to learn that most teachers and trainers had never even heard the word, let alone started to incorporate these findings into their practice. Today, much has changed, as neuroscience has increasingly captured the headlines and fueled our imaginations with the possibilities of our own brains.

My Science Manifesto - We're All Science Workers
Last week a colleague of mine gave me some pointed feedback that set me back a bit. "I'm not following you for your political beliefs," she said. My initial reaction was to deny that I was making any political statements, but the truth is, I was and I knew it. I've been increasingly frustrated with a trend to treat science as a political hostage, as though your understanding of climate change, the safety of vaccines or the accuracy of a crowd count depended on your affiliation with a particular party. In reality, the pursuit, respect for and understanding of science should have nothing to do with politics. And yet, in these crazy times, apparently it does. And that's a huge problem for all of us.

Featured Podcast
One of the most rewarding things I've experienced as a learning consultant is being able to plant the seeds of new best practices and watch them bear fruit in so many unexpected ways. Last year I gave a presentation at
Learning Solutions 2016, organized by the eLearning Guild. One of the attendees,
Eve Alexander, was inspired to check out
my book and begin applying brain-based learning concepts to her own work at
Frontline Research & Learning Institute, where she works as a content development coordinator. (I highly recommend the institute's online magazine featuring ideas, insight and civil discourse related to the advancement of education.)

Make Your Own Animated Characters and Comic Strips
Hi Everyone!
In my workshops I often talk about the power of story to draw the learner into the role of a character, seeing things through his or her eyes.
Park Howell's excellent podcast on this subject is worth another listen to remind you of how your brain interprets a good story as a "real" event. But it can be challenging to find a selection of diverse characters to use in your training designs. Most clip art collections start looking pretty dated just a few months after you've purchased them.
My colleague
Eve Alexander has persuaded
Pixton, makers of a nice easy-to-use custom character and comic strip tool, to give all of us 50% off a year's subscription. Now you can use fresh images in your training stories! To get your 50% off, use this link:
https://www.pixton.com/learningtogo
Your price will be half the usual price for a year subscription.
By the way, I had nothing to do with this very cool offer; I'm just happy to share it with you. You can also try it out before you decide to take them up on 50% off for a year. Please
let me know how it goes and maybe I'll feature you in a future issue of the newsletter or podcast. Much thanks to the folks at Pixton and Eve, for putting this together!

Mentoring New Leaders Without Real-World Experience International Mentoring Association Conference
According to Malcolm Gladwell, it takes 10,000 hours of concentrated practice to become an expert in any field or skill. In the past, many companies were able to develop new leaders from within, using this principle to provide several carefully crafted years of field experience, stretch assignments and mentoring relationships to build their leadership pipeline. Unfortunately, the pace of change is so accelerated in today's super-heated climate that we no longer have 10,000 hours. With baby boomers retiring and the need for leadership more critical than ever, most companies will have to promote Millennial employers who are long on talent but short on experience into leadership roles they may not be ready for. Fortunately, Dr. Nanette Miner and I are collaborating on a brain-based leadership development program that leverages the latest discoveries in neuroscience to build skill-building experience that can simulate some of those 10,000 hours.

Spaces are filling quickly! Register today to be sure you don't miss this live event.
If you could understand what was happening in the brains of your target audience, would you be a more effective trainer, designer, consultant, or leader? Thanks to recent advances in neuroscience, learning and talent development professionals now have an opportunity to alter their approaches to change management, leadership development, training, and instructional design. Learn how the brain receives, encodes, and retrieves information to construct knowledge, and use these insights to improve your learning programs.
