Gerald Mahoney, PhD, Appointed Associate Dean of Research and Training
Gerald Mahoney, PhD , Verna Houck Motto Professor of Families and Communities, was appointed Associate Dean for Research and Training at the Mandel School effective September 1.
"Dr. Mahoney has a distinguished record of external funding for research and training projects from federal, state and foundation sources. He has advised faculty on the grant process since his arrival at the Mandel School. As Associate Dean, he will be focused on supporting current research and building for the future," said Dean Gilmore upon making the appointment.

Dr. Mahoney's research is focused primarily on parent and family influences on children’s development and social emotional functioning. He has published numerous studies on parent influences on the development of children at-risk or with disabilities, as well as on the application of research findings from the parent-child literature to early intervention practice.

As Associate Dean for Research and Training, he succeeds Elizabeth M. Tracy, PhD , Grace Longwell Coyle Professor in Social Work.
Celebrating New Chair Appointments
The Mandel School is thrilled to announce two endowed professorship appointments, reflecting distinction in scholarship, teaching, and leadership.

Aloen L. Townsend, PhD , was appointed the Ralph S. and Dorothy P. Schmitt Professor. A celebration of Dr. Townsend's appointment is scheduled for November 3, 2017. [ Learn more ]

Mark L. Joseph, PhD , was appointed the Leona Bevis/Marguerite Haynam Associate Professor in Community Development. A celebration of Dr. Joseph's appointment is scheduled for February 2018, with details to be announced soon.

Three Mandel School faculty members are being recognized as mentors through the CSWE Council on the Role and Status of Women in Social Work Education Mentor Recognition Program, which honors mentors who have made a difference. They will be acknowledged at the Networking Breakfast on Saturday, October 21, and on the CSWE website. They are:

In addition, congratulations to doctoral student En-jung Shon , who will receive the 2017 Outstanding Dissertation Proposal Award from the Korean American Social Work Educators Association (KASWEA) at their annual business meeting at CSWE APM on October 20 at 4:30 p.m. in State Room 2 at the Conference Center 3rd Floor. The title of her dissertation is "Psychosocial predictors of lifetime mammography among middle-aged and older Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean immigrant women in the U.S."  Aloen Townsend, PhD, Ralph S. and Dorothy P. Schmitt Professor, is En-jung's Dissertation Chair.
Hokenstad International Lecture to Focus on Developing the "Caring Being"
Join  Dr. Terry Hokenstad , Distinguished University Professor Emeritus and the Ralph S. and Dorothy P. Schmitt Professor Emeritus, at the 11th Annual Hokenstad International Lecture at CSWE APM 2017 on Friday, October 20, at 8:45 a.m. in the Lone Star B, Conference Center, 2nd floor. 

Manohar Pawar, PhD , professor of social work at Charles Stuart University in Australia and president of the International Consortium for Social Development, was selected as the lecturer. He will present “Kant, Bentham, Aristotle, and My Grandmother: Developing the ‘Caring Being’ in Social Work.”
