Celebrating Commencement 2023

“Wow, just wow!” With those three words of joy from School of Health Dean Christopher J. King, PhD, MHSc, FACHE, commencement exercises began for the inaugural class of the school founded less than a year earlier. A spirited audience of family, friends and loved ones filled the seats of the storied Gaston Hall for the May 20 graduation.

On a sunny spring day in downtown DC, Lee Jones, MD, dean for medical education at the School of Medicine, warmly welcomed the friends and families of the graduating class as they celebrated the successful completion of their medical degrees. “We are here to honor the Class of 2023 — the 171st medical school class to graduate from the School of Medicine,” Jones said.

Surrounded by hundreds of their friends and family members, the first 341 graduates of the newly formed School of Nursing gathered on Healy Lawn to celebrate commencement. “You are the first graduating class in Georgetown’s new School of Nursing, which was established July 2, 2022, continuing a 120-year tradition at Georgetown of educating nurses,” said School of Nursing Dean Roberta Waite EdD, RN, PMHCNS, ANEF, FAAN.

Students in Biomedical Graduate Education programs graduated with the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences May 19 on the Healy Lawn. Brian Greene, professor of physics and mathematics at Columbia University and Rhodes Scholar, delivered the commencement address sharing a message of gratitude for human existence and perspective.

Since childhood, Malcolm Meredith (M’23) knew he wanted to be a surgeon. His experiences at the School of Medicine prompted him to focus on transplant medicine, a career he’ll pursue as a surgical resident at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

Twins Layan Shahrour (H’23) and Nesreen Shahrour (H’23) entered Georgetown searching for outlets to connect with their Arabic and Muslim identities after leaving Syria at the age of 10. Their special bond encouraged them to support and challenge each other academically.

Sarah Bryant (N’23) knew at a young age that she wanted to be both a nurse and naval officer. Georgetown gave her the opportunity to pursue both passions while putting into practice the Jesuit value of cura personalis, care of the whole person. She was commissioned May 22 as an ensign in the United States Navy during a ceremony at the Jefferson Memorial.

Parents, spouses, children, significant others and friends assembled in one of Georgetown’s most storied places, Gaston Hall, for the May 19 parade of awards.

It is the highest honor bestowed by Georgetown University School of Medicine upon medical educators — selection into the MAGIS Society of Master Teachers. On May 18, Georgetown University honored the newest MAGIS members, Amy Burke, MD, MPH, and Mary Furlong, MD, and inducted Donna Cameron, PhD, MPH, who was selected in 2022 but was unable to attend last year’s ceremony.
