It is hard to believe that nine years ago, on a beautiful August evening, was our first A Summer Evening on the Farm. Since then, the event has become an annual favorite and an opportunity to gather with community members to celebrate our successes, thank our donors, and raise critical funds to make the Lower Cape a place where year-round residents can live, work, and thrive.
This year's A Summer Evening on the Farm takes place on Thursday, August 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Michael Herman's Greenhouse by the Sea, a certified organic vegetable farm in South Orleans where his family worked the land for decades. The Herman family's deep roots in Orleans date back to the 1920s. Growing up, Michael would often visit during the summers. A few years ago, Michael moved full-time to the Cape to build a business and a life in the community he and his family love. Because he cares about our community, he also makes time to support and volunteer with many Lower Cape organizations. This past winter, as chair of the Orleans Select Board, he and his colleagues advanced a package of important measures at the Annual Town Meeting to support the development of more affordable housing and promote the local economy.
I am grateful for community members like Michael, supporters like you, and our CDP team who understand the connection between housing and economic development and who are committed to working collaboratively and generously to create safe, affordable housing for year-round residents and provide advice and investment to small businesses.
Please join us on August 24 to be inspired and support our efforts to build a more resilient and diverse year-round community on the Lower Cape. You can purchase tickets here. The event will sell out, so please don't delay.
I look forward to seeing you!

Helping Sugar Surf Find a Permanent Home
“I was really nervous to commit to the loan. I had never needed one before. Pam was helpful and reassuring throughout the whole process."
–Katy Weeks, Owner, Sugar Surf
Katy Weeks has been surfing at the Outer Cape beaches for as long as she can remember. What started as a hobby became a passion in her teenage years. She dabbled in the competitive scene before spending a decade traveling the world and surfing. No matter how far she traveled, she would always find her way back to Cape Cod.
A little over ten years ago, Katy noticed a huge surge in interest in surfing, especially in her hometown of Wellfleet. She was happy to see more people enjoying the sport she loved but quickly found that many new surfers needed "surfing etiquette." Rather than sit by, Katy saw a business opportunity. In 2011, she founded Sugar Surf, a women's surf school.

Affordable Housing Consultant and CDP Board Member

My family has spent time on the Outer Cape for over 30 years, and 13 years ago, we were fortunate to buy a home in Wellfleet. I have been involved with community development corporations throughout Massachusetts as a staff member, consultant, board member, and enthusiastic donor since 1984, and my involvement in public service goes back to 1974. My area of expertise is affordable housing development. I have seen many very capable CDCs and some not-so-effective ones. When I was asked to join the Community Development Partnership Board, it was a natural fit. In the time I have served, I have become even more impressed with the dedication, professionalism, positive attitude, and proactive work of the CDP board and staff.
Pick up any Cape newspaper, and you will see new weekly stories about advances on the housing front. Working low- and moderate-income families need relief from the high cost of housing here, and young families need opportunities that will enable them to stay in the communities where they grew up. We tend to think of our state as generally liberal, at least on most issues, but affordable housing seems to spark intense reactions from local residents, both in favor and in opposition. I have seen municipal and community responses on the Cape and elsewhere ranging from extremely hostile and litigious to receptive and supportive. Today, however, Cape Cod residents, government officials, business owners, and representatives are increasingly aware of the acute need to expand the supply of affordable housing. From Brewster and Harwich to Provincetown, I see the tide shifting increasingly in favor of affordable housing, and the CDP has been a major contributor to that shift.

Why Support 'A Summer Evening on the Farm'?
"It's a great opportunity to connect with friends, spend time with people who care about the CDP's mission, and hear how their work helps our community.”
–Barbara Wood, CDP Supporter
The CDP's A Summer Evening on the Farm – the organization's largest community-uniting, generosity-raising event – is a time for celebration, joy, and giving. Each August, year-round and part-time residents and friends throughout the Lower and Outer Cape prioritize supporting the transformative work of the CDP. On August 24th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., we will celebrate the 9th year of this casual, fun event and seek to raise awareness and support the CDP's work. This year's goal is to raise $300,000 at the event, with every dollar raised going directly to increase access to affordable housing and provide small business training and assistance to impact year-round residents' lives.

The CDP has tax credits available for the 2023 Community Investment Tax Credit (CITC) program. Through this program, donors who give $1,000 or more are eligible to receive a tax credit worth 50% of the total donation amount. For example, if you donate $2,000 you would receive a credit on your state tax bill of $1,000. And receive a charitable deduction on the remaining $1,000.
