Our proud graduates from HPHS and DHS walked across the stage at Ravinia to receive their diplomas. D113 could not be happier for the Class of 2025 and all that they have accomplished during their time with us.

EmpowerHER Conference
DHS Assistant Athletic Director Molly Tomlinson, in collaboration with several departments, organized the inaugural EmpowerHER Conference at Deerfield High School to empower more than 700 female athletes and coaches.
The event featured ESPN journalist Sarah Spain as the keynote speaker and offered breakout sessions designed to inspire girls to build confidence, develop leadership skills and stay engaged in sports.
Special thanks to all who attended, as well as the athletic department, coaches, athletes, technology team, theatre department, buildings and grounds crew and security staff, whose efforts made the event possible.

HPHS Student Making a Difference
An HPHS student is making all the difference at the Green Bay Animal Hospital in Wilmette. Katerina Shutman has participated in hands-on animal care since 2022, becoming a paid employee in 2024.
Some of her responsibilities include supporting animals during vaccinations and general evaluations, preparing rooms for animal examinations and engaging in product inventory for deliveries. Katerina has been described as a "team player with excellent collaboration skills." Congratulations, Katerina!

HPHS Charity Drive Raises Over $120,000
Highland Park High School's Charity Drive raised $124,085.51 for the Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation. The funds raised will benefit gastrointestinal cancer research. Thank you to the students, staff, parents and community members for their hard work and contributions to this effort. Applications for next year's efforts are now being accepted. This fall, Deerfield High School’s School Chest will raise funds for the non-profit charity the Hallie225 Foundation. The Hallie225 Foundation honors the life of Hallie Grossman, a 2016 DHS graduate who courageously fought a rare form of cancer before passing away at age 25. Hallie's legacy lives on through the nonprofit, awarding academic scholarships and medical grants to those in financial need. Stay tuned to find out how you can support the efforts this fall!

Pizza Bowl Returns, Raises Over $3,000
District 113 Education Foundation's fundraising event, Pizza Bowl, made its triumphant return for the first time since 2020, raising $3,032, which will fund grants for innovative programs at both high schools.
Attendees were treated to pizza and sweet treats from Highland Park and Deerfield while listening to live performances by the DHS and HPHS jazz bands. Thank you to the event organizers and all who attended!

Student Group Raises Over $250,000
Deerfield High School's Rays of Hope was named Chicago’s 2025 Student Visionaries of the Year by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Over seven weeks, they set a new local record by raising $256,851—the highest among 27 Illinois teams.
Their work earned them the Mission Pillar Award for Patient Education. Every team member reached the "$5K Club," with two surpassing $10,000 in donations.

County Award
DHS Social Worker Amy Hindson and HPHS School Psychologist Dr. Agata Watson were recognized as Lake County's Mental Health Specialists of the Year. The Lake County Regional Office of Education's Educator of the Year ceremony honors the outstanding education professionals in Lake County. Congratulations to Amy and Agata! We are grateful for their steadfast dedication and unwavering support of our students.

School Community Liaison Wins Award
School Community Liaison Luisa Espinosa-Lara was honored with the 2025 Community Partner Award, bestowed upon her by the Park District of Highland Park. Luisa helps connect multilingual families in District 113 and also leads the De Padre a Estudiante program. Thank you, Luisa, for making D113 more inclusive!

National Merit Scholarship Finalists Named
DHS students Olivia Fisz and Joshua Varon and HPHS student Benjamin Smollar have been named National Merit Scholarship finalists for their academic achievements.
Becoming a finalist begins with students taking the PSAT/NMSQT during their junior year. PSAT/NMSQT scores, academic requirements and application materials are all part of the rigorous selection process. Congratulations to all who advanced in the program!

Building Scholars
Over 200 students were scholars at their respective schools, earning either a 4.4 weighted or 3.8 unweighted GPA after seven semesters. The district is incredibly proud of the academic achievements earned by our students at HPHS and DHS.

Biliteracy Honors
By last semester, over 300 District 113 students had earned either the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy or Commendation toward Biliteracy. This semester, several additional students at HPHS and DHS earned the distinction, bringing the total to 341.
The seal recognizes students who have attained a high level of proficiency in English and another language, while the commendation is a recognition of students who demonstrate progress towards achieving a high level of proficiency in English and another language. Students who earn either recognition receive the designation on their transcript and high school diploma.

Illinois High School Theatre Festival All-State Production
Several DHS students and staff participated in the annual Illinois High School Theatre Festival (IHSTF), the nation's largest and oldest non-competitive high school theatre festival.

Students Violet Krol and Nathan Lee were named Illinois Principals' Association Lake Region Students of the Year. Violet and Nathan were honored at a recognition breakfast along with students at each school in Lake County.

The artworks of several DHS students were selected to be displayed in the Illinois High School Art Exhibition at the Bridgeport Art Center in April. More than 100 high schools across Illinois participated in the event. Multiple Warrior students earned awards at the exhibit.

Diversity in HPHS Computer Science
Highland Park High School has been honored with the College Board’s AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for its efforts in expanding access to computer science education for young women. This distinction celebrates schools that are closing the gender gap and broadening participation in the field of technology.
To qualify for this award, schools must either have 50% or more female students enrolled in one of the two AP computer science courses or demonstrate that the percentage of female students taking the AP computer science exam is equal to or exceeds the overall percentage of female students in the school.

DHS Student Places at State Science Tournament
At the Illinois Junior Academy of Science (IJAS) State Science Exposition, DHS junior Madeline Katz earned a GOLD rating and was recognized with a Top 10 award for her science project in the paper session.
Madeline’s research project, titled Using eDNA Metabarcoding as a Monitoring Mechanism for Invasive Species, investigated which invasive species are impacting the marine environments of northern Illinois. Her work also aimed to raise awareness about the threats these species pose and to explore potential strategies to mitigate or prevent their spread.

DHS Senior Earns Student of the Quarter Honors
DHS senior Dakota McCleary was named Student of the Quarter in Emergency Medical Services at Lake County Tech Campus. The EMS program prepares students for careers as emergency medical technicians (EMT-B) through comprehensive training.

Students Win 1st Place at Biomedical Competition
One of three Deerfield High School teams competed in the SHARP! Biomed Breakthrough Challenge at the University of Illinois Chicago, designing innovative prosthetic device improvements.
Junior Ella Gil coached the teams, and their projects featured 3D design models and were presented to UIC faculty from the Colleges of Engineering and Medicine. Team DREaM earned 1st Place for its prosthetic liner to enhance sensation in neuropathic amputees. Below are the members of the winning team:

DHS Robotics Wins State, Advances to World Championships
DHS' robotics team, Warbots, won the Illinois State Championship while setting the world record for highest score in a match this season.
Following the team's incredible performance at state, they competed at the World Championships in Houston. Additionally, the Warbots won their regional championships hosted at Deerfield High School.

Over 3,000 students gathered in New York City for the annual National High School Model United Nations Conference. The Highland Park High School debate team had a successful showing at the Illinois Congressional Debate Association State Tournament, winning the state championship, the school's first in three years. DHS Freshman Sets Single-Season Record for Three-Pointers
In late January, freshman Eve Engler surpassed 100 three-point field goals, setting a new single-season record at Deerfield High School. She finished the season with 127 made threes and secured a spot in the Illinois High School Association record book, ranking 10th all-time for most three-pointers made in a season.

DHS Track & Field Athletes Set New School Records
DHS has two new track & field record holders in Will Lambert and Harrison Erdman. Lambert set a new record in the indoor 600-meter run with a time of 1:26.07, while Erdman set a new outdoor triple jump record with a distance of 14.15 meters. Congratulations on making your way into the history books!

HPHS Senior Becomes Basketball Program's All-Time Leading Scorer
While leading the Highland Park High School basketball program to a 20+ win season, Simon Moschin etched his name into the history books, becoming the school's all-time leading scorer. The record, previously held by Fred Lind, stood for 60 years. Congratulations, Simon, and best of luck competing at the next level!

The Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Association named Aaron Rogers, an assistant for the Deerfield High School boys tennis team, the Class 2A Boys Assistant Coach of the Year.

HPHS Hockey Player Caps off Successful Career With MVP at All-State Game
Senior HPHS hockey player Dylan Lansky ended his career by being named MVP in the Illinois High School All-State game. Lansky was involved in four of his team's six goals, scoring one and assisting on three more. This was Lansky's second All-State selection. He ends his career as Highland Park's all-time leading scorer while also leading the IHSHL in scoring in back-to-back seasons.
