The NET GALA!

EGF Accelerator Fellow Chidi Asoluka, Founder of NewComms, which uses humanities as a jumping off point for social justice, explains...

Before it was our signature event, The Net Gala was a classroom conversation about literature—and inequity. During our first summer studio in 2023, Cohort 1 read The House on Mango Street and paused at a striking moment: Esperanza, the young protagonist, walks by a row of abandoned houses and imagines they could be homes for the unhoused. It’s a moment of both vision and limitation. She has the idea, but not the access.

One student asked aloud:

“What if Esperanza had been in the room with a real estate developer?”

“What if she had the social capital to take her idea seriously—and be taken seriously?"

That question changed everything.

Our students realized that while their peers at elite schools often had deep relationships with doctors, lawyers, and CEOs, they were chasing similar dreams without those networks. So they flipped the script.

He created the NET GALA!
