Celebrating Freedom

Juneteenth is the United States' second Independence Day. It commemorates the emancipation of African Americans from enslavement and is a celebration of Freedom. It is a time to gather with loved ones and reflect upon the past, assess our present, and plan ways to build an even brighter future. Celebrating Juneteenth Through Food

While Juneteenth started as yearly local celebrations in Texas, it is now celebrated across the country. Check out our collection of cookbooks with great recipes for your family and community celebration. Learn more about the traditioonal foods of Juneteenth here

Celebrate Juneteeth at NRPL

We kicked off the Library's Juneteenth celebrations today with a children's quilt making workshop. Children created beautiful quilt squares which will be incorporated into a community quilt. 

Thank you to Judith Weber, and Cynthia Reid for designing and leading this program (with assistance from Madi Burton and Tobe Sevush.) Be sure to stop by City Hall on Sunday, June 19 for more Juneteenth festivities, including another chance for kids of all ages to make quilt squares.

Join us on Friday, June 17, 7:00 pm for "I Hear Music in the Air" Gospel Fest, a Gospel Choir Concert, featuring the music of PURPOSE from Bethesda Baptist Church of New Rochelle, Pastor Ronell Fuller & the Band, Promise Land Community Church Choir, and Sistas in Christ. 

The celebration continues Monday, June 20, 1:00 pm with a Bokandeye African Dance Workshop for children ages 6 and up. At 2:30 pm, children and adults will be thrilled and enlightened by the rich and colorful history of West Africa through dance, rhythm, song and theater as performed by the Bokandeye Dance Troupe. Our Summer Reading Kickoff Party is Just 2 Weeks Away. 

Sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge, "Oceans of Possibilities" at our kickoff party with NRBID on Saturday, June 25, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Kids will have a "fin-tastic" time meeting The Pout-Pout Fish, boogieing through the bubbles with the Bubble Bus, and so much more. Save the date and get ready to dive into the fun! Register here.

New Favorites with the Children's Room!

Miss Elizabeth shares her new favorite picture book biography, I Am Mozart Too: The Lost Genius of Maria Anna Mozart by Audrey Ades.This book details the life of Maria Anna Mozart, older sister of Wolfgang, who was a child prodigy and secret composer. 

Planes, Trains and Automobiles!

Well, not quite, but we are pleased to let you know we have brought back trains and toys, including puzzles, blocks and puppets, in the Children's Room!  All items will be properly sanitized afer each use. 

Children were thrilled to have access to these old favorites which had to be tucked away during the height of the pandemic. 

Homework Help on Hold

Homework Help will not be available Tuesday, June 14 - Tuesday, June 21 but will resume on Wednesday, June 22.

Read-Along Stories and More 

Tumblebooks enables young readers, and kids of all ages access to read-along stories and videos anywhere. There are language learning books, nonfiction about things like animals, history, science, biography books - and lots and lots of story books. 

New! FREE Notary Public Services

Need a document notarized? Notary Public Corey Link will be at the Library to notarize documents on Thursdays, June 23, July 21 andAugust 18, 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Stop by the BTOP room on the 2nd floor with your document(s) and a photo ID. First come. First served.

Eagle Scouts Honored

The New Rochelle Troop 15 Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held on June 4, honoring six Scouts who earned the Eagle Scout rank in the last two years. Among the honorees was Adam C. Thomas who renovated the Children’s Garden at the main branch of the Library in July 2020. The renovated Garden served as the perfect space to hold children's programs during the pandemic, and will be in full use again this summer. Thank you to Adam and his team of fellow scouts, friends, and family, who helped create a much needed, welcoming space for our children. 

Bloom & Grow 2 Begins Tomorrow!

Just in time for graduation, wedding, engagement and any other celebration, the the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District's (NRBID) Bloom&Grow2 runs Friday, June 10 - Friday June 17.


It's the trending healthy way to dine out, sip and celebrate in @NewRoDowntown.
