NATIONAL FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY WEEK
We are celebrating the Friends of the Redwood City Public Library the week of October 17-23, 2021, as part of the 16th annual celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week. We are grateful for the Friends 365 days a year, but this week we are pausing to spend time honoring all that they do for RCPL.

Who are the Friends of the Redwood City Public Library? Established in 1972, they are an all volunteer group that dedicates many hours per year sorting, scanning and pricing thousands of books, running the Downtown Library Bookstore, Redwood Shores Branch Library Book Kiosk and online book sales plus staffing material donation events every month. They also sell honey made by our very own RCPL Bees! The Friends fund Library programs throughout the year, including the Summer Learning Challenge, Little Learners, music, author events, book clubs and so much more. For the current fiscal year, Friends has approved program funding of over $90,000. It is due to their hard work and passion for our library and its programs that we are able to provide the depth and breadth of activities that we do!

"The Friends of the Redwood City Public Library have contributed over $800,000 during the past decade to support beloved Library activities and events like the Summer Learning Challenge, author visits to local schools, early literacy workshops for children and families, and so much more. Their support helps make RCPL the responsive, impactful, active community resource that it is, especially for the people who need us the most," says Library Director Derek Wolfgram.

To say thank you, consider giving them a donation to support Library programming. You can also follow them on Facebook and Instagram for updates on Friends and Library activities including sales and events.

Thanks Friends!

COME PLAY WITH US!
If you hadn't heard, last Monday we restored hours and services after a very long year and a half! Over the next few weeks, we are highlighting some of the services that are now available. Today we are featuring our early childhood learning interactives, available at each library location.

Our learning play structures are designed by Burgeon Group, specialists in early-learning interactives in public libraries and museums. The literacy-rich play environments are designed to encourage parents and children to play collaboratively and to promote pre-literacy for babies, toddlers, and their caregivers. The colorful spaces provide stimulating interactives, cozy seating, and creative book nooks. If your child is a bit older, there are also activities that are aimed at preschool children and beginning readers. We have Early Childhood Learning structures at each of the Redwood City Public Library locations - Downtown Library’s Baby Bay, Redwood Shores Branch Library and Schaberg Branch Library.

While we aren’t having any indoor events or storytimes until next year, we encourage you to come to our Thursday, 10am Storytime Outside the Library, and then head inside to visit the Baby Bay. Bring your little ones and come play with us!
SHARE YOUR INPUT
The Redwood City Advisory Redistricting Committee (ARC) wants your ideas about where to draw the lines for electing City Councilmembers for the next decade. The final results of the 2020 Census are in, and the data shows how our community has changed in the past 10 years. Using that information, the ARC is asking the community for their help balancing all 84,423 Redwood City residents among 7 City Council districts.

The ARC invites the community to get involved with the District Mapping process either online, in-person or by mailing in draft maps (available in English and Spanish) for consideration.  In-person, drop-in hours are available at City Hall and the Downtown Library. Trained, bilingual staff are available to help you complete and submit a draft map, and can answer questions and provide other information on the Redistricting process.

Submit your maps by October 25 to be considered by the ARC on November 3. For more information, go here.
