Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, Lakehill students celebrated the rich history, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino cultures through engaging classroom activities, creative projects, and hands-on experiences.
In Lower School Spanish, students explored Hispanic and Latino cultures through educational videos, classroom discussions, and grade-level projects. Their cultural exploration will continue with activities centered on Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), learning about the significance of honoring and remembering loved ones. In art class, students discovered the vibrant traditions of Mexican folk art through Otomí-inspired designs, exploring the bright colors, intricate patterns, and nature-inspired imagery that reflect the heritage of Indigenous communities in Mexico. Students also learned how folk artists often develop their skills through traditions passed down across generations.
Middle School Spanish students explored Hispanic history, traditions, and influential figures through a variety of cultural experiences. Students learned about Mexican Independence Day, played traditional Lotería Mexicana, and enjoyed Mexican treats. They also studied influential Hispanic figures, including Lionel Messi, Selena Quintanilla, and Frida Kahlo, while learning about the lasting contributions of Hispanic communities.
The celebration extended beyond the classroom with a Hispanic Heritage Month Assembly, where faculty members shared personal experiences and meaningful family traditions. Students enjoyed a vibrant Mexican folklórico dance performance, followed by a special workshop where eighth graders learned and practiced traditional dance steps with the visiting instructor.
To conclude the month, Middle School students combined cultural research, creativity, and language skills through special projects. Sixth graders researched influential Hispanic figures and created colorful posters highlighting their accomplishments, while eighth graders explored Spanish-speaking countries through tri-fold displays featuring geography, cuisine, cultural traditions, and more. Students will present their findings to classmates, introducing themselves in Spanish before sharing their research in English.
Through art, language, history, music, and dance, students across Lakehill gained a deeper appreciation for the diversity and cultural contributions of Hispanic communities while celebrating the curiosity, creativity, and connections that make learning meaningful.
