Latin American movies: films in Spanish language

Dr. Carlos F. Salinas Scholarship Award

Círculo Hispanoamericano de Charleston’s Annual Event will be awarding a scholarship to a Hispanic/Latino student attending a college or university in the Charleston area. The award will recognize the student’s academic excellence and his/her demonstrated involvement in the community, especially on events helping Hispanic community.  This year’s award will go to a student from College of Charleston.

Evento anual del Círculo Hispanoamericano de Charleston para hacer entrega de la beca Dr. Carlos F. Salinas a un estudiante hispano asistiendo a una de las universidades en el área de Charleston. La distinción reconoce la excelencia académica y el trabajo comunitario del estudiante, en especial su participación en eventos en beneficio de la comunidad hispana. La beca de este año será otorgada a un estudiante del College of Charleston.

Two college students, Abril Castillo-Acosta and Corin Wiggins, Physical Theater students with a Minor in Film, are doing an internship at Art Pot. Maribel Acosta, director of the organization, is the mentor of this project, which involves a process of research, interviews, field work, and the production of a documentary film. The main objective is to delve into the reality of the Latino community and its challenges and achievements as immigrants, and to present the results from the perspective of the youth. One of the two college students is of Latino origin and the other knows very little information about this community; therefore, it is a challenge for them both. They have chosen to center their narrative on the stories of first and / or second generation Latino immigrant youth in the tri-county area.

Dos estudiantes universitarias, Abril Castillo-Acosta y Corin Wiggins, estudiantes de Teatro Físico con mención en Cine, están haciendo una pasantía en Art Pot. Maribel Acosta, directora de la organización, es la mentora de este proyecto, que involucra un proceso de investigación, entrevistas, trabajo de campo y la producción de un documental. El objetivo principal es ahondar en la realidad de la comunidad latina y sus desafíos y logros como inmigrantes, y presentar los resultados desde la perspectiva de la juventud. Uno de los dos estudiantes universitarios es de origen latino y el otro sabe muy poca información sobre esta comunidad; por lo tanto, es un desafío para ambos. Han optado por centrar su narrativa en las historias de jóvenes inmigrantes latinos de primera y / o segunda generación en el área de los tres condados.
