Cafe Cultura has been recognized as a 2016 IMAGINE 2020 Fund recipient by Denver Arts & Venues and the Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs. The development of this unique experience was inspired by the seven vision elements that make up the foundation of IMAGINE 2020, Denver's cultural plan, and proudly joins the collective effort in furthering arts, culture and creativity throughout Denver. Cafe Cultura continues our Poetry/Spoken Word classes at DSST College View, Kepner Beacon Middle School, and La Academia. Below are some examples of their writings:
"I am from the struggles for civil rights.
I come from the ones they call aliens,
immigrants,
and wetbacks.
I am more than all stereotypes can claim.
The judgements,
racial comments,
and inequality
make me stronger as I grow.
Tus palabras no me duelen.
México vive en mi corazón
como nunca te imaginaras."

the smell summoning my ancestors
and opening the door for them.
They line up behind me,
waiting for their piece of frybread
that we will take into the front room
while enjoying each other's company.

Join Our Movement!

| Xpress Yourself Spoken Word/Poetry Workshops for Youth (#XpressYourself) |
We have worked with schools and organizations throughout Colorado to give underserved youth an opportunity to express themselves
. We have recently conducted our workshop for the following schools/organizations: Emory Elementary, Girls Inc, Upward Bound @ Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Colorado Youth At-Risk.
If you are interested
in having Cafe Cultura present at your school or organization, feel free to contact us. Our
basic version
is a
one time, 1 to 2 hour
session
. We have used this
highly engaging
and
culturally relevant
workshop structure for over a decade to encourage Chicana/o and Native youth to use spoken word to give voice to our stories of love, struggle, injustice, and celebration. They serve to
support Language Arts curriculum (4th through 12th grades)
. Workshop structure was designed by a spoken word artist with 4 years experience teaching at the middle and high school level with contributions from other poets and youth advocates. Click here for more information.
