Dear Friend and Neighbor,

Today we join with our sisters and brothers around the world to celebrate International Women's Day, an important acknowledgement of the integral role women play in our society, families, workplaces and more. As a proud husband and father of two young daughters, I recognize every day the need to promote and stand behind all women, encouraging them to be strong, intelligent and confident.

I remain dismayed that in 2016, we are far from true gender parity in New York, America and around the world. While we herald our progressive values and the distances we've traveled from a drastically less equitable past, we have much further to go. The lack of pay equity remains a glaring example of this fact, as does the continued sexual harassment and domestic violence our community is touched by with too much regularity. 

I take it upon myself as a father, husband and elected official of a widely diverse community, to remain steadfast in support of gender parity. I hope you will join me in acknowledging and celebrating this important day for women across the world as we continue to make strides in achieving these laudable goals. Thank you.

En este día nos unimos a nuestras hermanas y hermanos por todo el mundo para celebrar el Día Internacional de la Mujer, un importante reconocimiento el rol integral que juegan las mujeres en nuestra sociedad, familias, lugares de trabajo y mucho más. Como orgulloso esposo y padre de dos jóvenes hijas, reconozco cada día la necesidad de promover y estar firme junto a mujeres fuertes, inteligentes y seguras de si mismas.

Permanezco consternado de que en el 2016, estamos aún a distancia de la igualdad de género en Nueva York, Estados Unidos y todo el mundo. Mientras que proclamamos nuestros valores progresistas y las distancias que hemos recorrido desde un pasado drásticamente menos equitativo, nos queda mucho por recorrer. La falta de igualdad en el salario permanece siendo un ejemplo de este hecho, como lo son el continuo acoso sexual y la violencia doméstica que tocan a nuestra comunidad con demasiada regularidad.

Me tomo la iniciativa en mi calidad de padre, esposo y oficial electo de una comunidad ampliamente diversa, de permanecer firme en apoyo a la igualdad de género. Espero que me acompañe en reconocer y celebrar éste importante día para la mujer de todo el mundo, mientras continuamos avanzando para lograr estas loables metas.
