To honor Black History Month, the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce has highlighted various West Virginia landmarks that have made important contributions to Black history. These sites hold deep significance, telling stories of resilience, achievement and cultural impact that have helped shape the history of our state.

Historic Black Universities & Colleges

in West Virginia

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in West Virginia hold significant cultural and educational importance. West Virginia's HBCUs, including West Virginia State University and Bluefield State University contribute to the educational landscape, economic development and social progress in the area. These HBCUs serve as a bridge for fostering diversity, preserving cultural heritage and promoting equity, ensuring that students from underrepresented backgrounds have access to quality education and opportunities for personal and professional growth.

West Virginia State University (WVSU) is located in Institute, West Virginia. Founded in 1891, WVSU has a rich legacy of commitment to education, especially for African American students in the region. It was established during a time when access to higher education for Black individuals was severely limited due to the socio-political climate in the United States.


In relation to Black History Month, WVSU plays a significant role in celebrating and preserving African American history and culture. The university actively engages in various programs and activities throughout February to honor the contributions and achievements of Black individuals. These initiatives often include lectures, art exhibitions, film screenings and discussions that highlight important figures and events within Black history.
