Maritime Fun Fact: One cargo ship can remove 2,500 truck trips from our local roadways!

The maritime industry plays a key role in the success of the Port of Redwood City. On May 22, we will celebrate National Maritime Day. It’s important to remember that our Port conducts multi-million dollar international trade every day, serving as the only deep-water port in South San Francisco Bay. The economic impact from the Port’s trade activities can be seen daily and is prominent throughout Silicon Valley as you notice new construction along our roadways, business expansions, and other development.

I want to thank our maritime stakeholders and community for steering the Port’s success, and especially to all the maritime workers that keep our Port operating safely and securely. I am honored to work alongside hardworking and dedicated maritime professionals and specialists.
Warm Regards,
Kristine A. Zortman
Executive Director, Port of Redwood City
Recognize Maritime Month
Maritime Month is a special time for ports across the nation. It is an opportunity to reflect on our history and look forward to our future. In 1933, Congress established National Maritime Day, which is celebrated annually on May 22. This year marks the 51st observance of Maritime Day by the Maritime Administration and the 88th since Congress established the national holiday. The United States Maritime Administration designated this year's theme as "America's Maritime Workforce: Connecting the Nation and the World."

We recognize the dedication and commitment our merchant mariners exemplify working behind the scenes to make certain that our U.S. imports and exports get where they need to go, especially during the current challenge of COVID-19.

In support of Maritime Month, we raise our anchors to the mariners, shippers, dockworkers and global supply chain workers that continue to make our Port a key resource for Silicon Valley.
Ocean cargo - to and from Silicon Valley
In 2020, over 1,800,000 metric tons of cargo were transported across the Port's wharves, from countries like Australia, Canada, Mexico; and to countries including India, Bangladesh, and Vietnam. The Port’s centralized location makes us a key asset for moving cargo on the Peninsula including sand, aggregates, cement, scrap metal, liquid bulk and more! With our intermodal capabilities, cargo can move via water, rail, and roads. Check out our history of fueling the local economy.
