How Military Families Can Celebrate the Earth
This Earth Day, military families have an opportunity to connect with nature, foster creativity, and build community. On April 22, Our Care Coordinator Anita Liang encourages families to visit Harvest Pierce County's Seed Library at The Farm at Franklin Pierce Schools. This free resource promotes food sovereignty, community sharing, and a resilient local food system. Families can pick up free packets of herb seeds and participate in a DIY herb-growing workshop, providing a meaningful activity for both parents and children.
The workshop is hands-on and simple, requiring materials like mason jars, potting soil, and labels. Not only does it offer an engaging way to spend the day, but it also instills valuable lessons for children. Liang shares, "My hope is to help military children experience a sense of purpose and responsibility while growing their herbs which can also foster mindfulness. Growing plants can help children understand where food comes from and the efforts needed to grow it, which could lead to a greater appreciation for food and can encourage creativity."
For families, growing herbs is a small yet impactful step towards sustainability, mindfulness, and self-sufficiency. It’s a chance to strengthen bonds within your family and community while nurturing a deeper connection to the earth. This Earth Day, plant seeds of growth and change—for your family and for the planet.
