Celebrating Native American Heritage Month

November is a special month that provides an opportunity for us to honor and celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and contributions of Native Americans. Native American Heritage Month observed throughout the month of November, is a time to recognize the profound impact Indigenous peoples have had on our history and society.

The history of Native American Heritage Month dates back to the early 20th century when Native American activists and advocates sought to raise awareness about the unique cultures and histories of Indigenous communities. President George H.W. Bush officially declared November National American Indian Heritage Month in 1990. The name was later changed to Native American Heritage Month to include Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians.

Native American Heritage Month offers us a chance to learn about and appreciate the countless contributions made by Indigenous peoples to our society. From art and music to science and medicine, their influence is profound and far-reaching. Moreover, it serves as a reminder of the challenges and injustices faced by Native Americans throughout history and their ongoing struggles for cultural preservation and equality.
