Honoring the Life & Legacy of Nancy Adler

Dr. Nancy Adler

On January 4, 2024, Dr. Nancy E. Adler, our founder and friend, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by laughter and love. Nancy was such a giant, she has touched the lives of so many through her mentorship, support, research, and guidance. Her impact will continue to reverberate throughout the world for generations to come.

Recently Daryl Van Tongeren wrote about “The curious joy of being wrong – intellectual humility means being open to new information and willing to change your mind” in The Conversation. He defines intellectual humility and highlights how it can show up in the various aspects of our identities and relationships.

He also shares that the “four main aspects of intellectual humility include being:

  • Open-minded, avoiding dogmatism and being willing to revise your beliefs.
  • Curious, seeking new ideas, ways to expand and grow, and changing your mind to align with strong evidence.
  • Realistic, owning and admitting your flaws and limitations, seeing the world as it is rather than as you wish it to be.
  • Teachable, responding non-defensively and changing your behavior to align with new knowledge.”

The research team is examining whether a city can achieve improved welfare and equity for Black and Latino/a/x individuals by implementing a personalized discount correlating with each individual’s ability to pay, rather than water shut-offs and late fees to deter missed payments.

Risk Adjustment Methods for Patient Experience to Advance Health Equity

By leveraging annual patient experience survey data, the project team will develop and test models comparing patient experiences across organizations that serve diverse patient populations to identify levers for intervening to improve racial equity.
