CT Open House Day
As part of CT Open House Day on Saturday June 11, the Mattatuck Museum will be offering Storytime: Papa, Daddy, and Riley and Masquerade Mask-Making (Children ages 5+) for free included with admission to the Museum. The Museum’s regularly scheduled Saturday 1:00 pm tour will also be free included with admission pricing.
Van Trip and Meet-Up: Florence Griswold Museum

Travel to the Florence Griswold Museum with the Mattatuck Museum and enjoy an unforgettable summer day in Old Lyme, CT. Begin with a guided tour of the gardens, historic house, and special exhibition by artist Dana Sherwood. Sherwood’s exhibition features films, sculpture installations, oil, and watercolor paintings, which look at the relationship between wild nature and domestic culture. Continue exploring the galleries and grounds on your own, followed by a delicious lunch by the water. Visit the award-winning Café Flo or bring your own to enjoy a picnic on their peaceful lawn. Finally, end the day with a guided walk along the Museum Artist Trail, practicing the art of appreciating nature and sunshine with certified Forest Therapy Guide, Regan Stacey. Lunch is not included. Enjoy the Mattatuck Museum’s collection and special changing exhibitions in a safe and comfortable environment. Private tours are also available. On Wednesday, June 15, tour The Garden and learn about the interdisciplinary works by the eight artists featured in the exhibition that address the sensory aspects of nature while embodying the artists’ emotional journeys over the course of this turbulent decade.

Assistant Curator Natalie DeQuarto of the Mattatuck Museum will delve into the exhibition, Shipwrecks: Duty of Memory which features photographs of elusive shipwrecks all over the world by Italian artist Stefano Benazzo. After the tour, learn about the stories and artistic process behind the photos from Stefano while enjoy delicious cocktail samples created by award-winning Cocktail Chemist Dimitrios Zahariadias. Looking for exciting summer opportunities for your kids? School might be out for the summer, but the fun is still IN at the Mattatuck Museum! Drop-off your child for these fun-filled day-long experiences. Children will be immersed in the Mattatuck’s galleries and special exhibitions while learning about history and developing their art skills with projects using unique materials and techniques. Join the Museum for these fun, safe, and educational childcare offerings throughout the summer.
Each week includes free Before Care (8-9am) and After Care (3:30-5pm). All supplies provided. Please bring a bagged lunch. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. June 27–July 1: Museum Masters – Learn about the life of world-renowned artists, their art styles and some of their famous works. Each day the kids focus on a new artist creating their own pieces inspired by different styles and mediums, becoming mini masters of the arts.
July 5–July 8 (closed on 7/4): Under the Sea – Dive into an underwater adventure as kids explore the Shipwrecks: Duty of Memory exhibition. Learn about what goes into shipbuilding, create your own sea shanty, discover the creatures that live under the sea, craft a unique underwater diorama, and much more.
July 11–July 15: Nature’s Wonders - Join the Museum for a week of discovery as participants explore the wonders of nature and create art from all that it has to offer. Kid’s will learn to sketch animals, and there will even be some guest appearances from the animal world at the Museum.
July 18–July 22: Magical Mysteries - Celebrate the fantastic world of magic, unicorns, dragons, mermaids, and wizards galore. Kids will explore the mysterious world of magic alongside learning about the real-life mystic as found in the exhibition Mystery & Benevolence: Masonic and Odd Fellows Folk Art. They’ll create sculptures of their favorite mystical creatures, masks. and more.
