Dear LA Civil Rights Family,

June is a time to reflect, honor, and recommit. Across Los Angeles, we recognize Pride Month, Immigrant Heritage Month, Juneteenth, and World Refugee Day -- each one a powerful reminder of the people and movements shaping our city. These observances call us to celebrate identity, defend dignity, and advance justice.

This month, we also shine a light on our Transgender Advisory Council. Their leadership and lived experience guide our work and strengthen our mission to protect every Angeleno. Their voices are vital and their presence matter--especially now.

Just days ago, a transgender woman was brutally attacked in Los Angeles. The violence she endured is a painful reminder: hate is still very present. We strongly denounce this act and stand with her and every person who deserves to live safely, freely, and without fear. We also acknowledge many Angelenos are facing uncertainty related to the recent deportation actions. While these events started just days ago, our commitment to supporting immigrant communities has been ongoing. For several months, we have been working with the Office of Mayor Karen Bass, Community Investment for Families, its Office of Immigrant Inclusion and Language Access, and the Los Angeles Public Library on Know Your Rights, a collaborative initiative dedicated to promoting immigrant rights and connecting individuals with critical resources. Learn more below.

At LA Civil Rights, our #LAForAll campaign reflects our unwavering mission -- but much of our work happens behind the scenes. Every day we work to uplift marginalized communities, investigate discrimination claims, implement corrective actions and enforce penalties to protect the rights of Angelenos. We invite you to show your support by visiting our online webstore and make a donation for your very own #LAForAll apparel.

This work has never been easy, but it has always been necessary. We remain committed to showing up, speaking out, and standing with our communities-not only during heritage months or holidays, but every single day.

Keep the faith and keep the fight,

Capri Maddox, Esq.

Executive Director

LA Civil Rights Department

You're Invited to #JustSayHello

Image Description: Flyer for the Just Say Hello campaign launch with details of the event and a QR code to RSVP.

Join us on Thursday, June 26 at the City Hall Forecourt as we officially launch our Just Say Hello campaign -- a citywide effort to break barriers and build bridges through something as simple as a greeting.

In a city as diverse as Los Angeles, where #LAisforEveryone, connection starts with kindness, and inclusion begins with acknowledgment. This campaign celebrates the power of saying hello across language, culture, and community.

Doors open at 9:00 AM, and the program begins at 10:00 AM.

Let’s come together to ensure an LA that is truly for everyone — one "hello" at a time.

The Spirit of Pride is Everywhere

On Friday, June 6, LA Civil Rights was proud to co-host a Pride Month Opening Breakfast with Councilwomen Traci Park (CD11) and Ysabel Jurado (CD 14). To kick off the month of events, we welcomed city leaders, non-profit organizations, and LGBTQIA+ community changemakers, m embers, and stakeholders.

Then on Sunday, June 8, LA Civil Rights hit the streets of Hollywood for the 2025 LA Pride Parade. We carried our banner proudly in front of the #LAForAll and Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez (CD13)–adorned double-decker bus, marching with our City family and thousands of proud Angelenos in a joyful display of unity and justice with energy, color, and a whole lot of love!

The crowd was electric, the music was upbeat, and the spirit was undeniable. 🏳️‍🌈 🌟 From waving flags to dancing down Sunset, our team and our families who joined, showed what it means to celebrate community, visibility, and inclusion.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, showed out, and helped make this day unforgettable!

The LA Civil Rights Department Volunteer Corps is accepting applications now through Friday, June 13. We’re looking for committed Angelenos ready to turn their passion into purpose. As a member of the Volunteer Corps, you’ll be a key part of our outreach and community engagement team, helping us show up for communities across Los Angeles.

This opportunity is open to anyone 18 and older, who can provide ongoing support and wants to be part of a team pushing for progress. Immigration status is never asked, and reasonable accommodations are always available.

TGI2+ Housing Resource Fair

On Monday, June 16, we are partnering with our Transgender Advisory Council and the Los Angeles Public Library to host the 2nd Annual TGI2+ Housing Resource Fair at the Central Library’s Mark Taper Auditorium. This event will bring together service providers, non-profit organizations, and community partners to offer resources and support for TGI2+ Angelenos experiencing housing insecurity. The day will include a panel discussion, lunch, and lots of resources!

Supporting Anti-Racism Efforts

On June 2, the LA Civil Rights Department participated in the final gathering of the LA County Anti-Racism, Diversity, and Inclusion (ARDI) Implementation Steering Committee. General Manager Capri Maddox and Principal Equity Strategist Ronnell Hampton have been present throughout the committee’s four-year journey, contributing to equity strategies grounded in the recommendations from the Ad Hoc Committee for Black People Experiencing Homelessness (BPEH).

During the final convening, participants reflected on these achievements and explored pathways to sustain and deepen the impact of the work. The Future Organization, our contractor for the City Council-initiated BPEH Audit, also provided updates on the progress of the audit. The event closed with a powerful drum circle led by Motherland Music, bringing the community together in celebration and reflection.

We will continue to work with the ARDI team to ensure alignment of city and county efforts to address homelessness through key recommendations and metrics related to the public facing dashboard. We will also participate in the Policy and Data Working Group, and Coalition for BIPOC People Experiencing Homelessness.
