Dear Friends,
I genuinely want to thank you for your support of History San José (HSJ) in 2016! This past year the staff at HSJ has been actively engaged in rethinking and reimaging our school and public programs. We want to maintain HSJ's position as a leading institution for elementary-age history programs in our region by continuing to update our programs, keeping them relevant for today's savvy students; and we want to provide high quality public programs for the entire community. We are working to incorporate 21st century life skills into all of our school and public programs that teach empathy, critical thinking, collaboration and self-directed learning - all skills important to building an intelligent and compassionate community.
We could not have sustained our school programs serving more than 24,000 children; or produced our original exhibitions; or hosted our events attended by more than 110,000 visitors without your assistance. As the holiday season nears, please consider giving gifts that make a difference like a tax-deductible year-end contribution; or renewing your HSJ Membership or giving a gift Membership. We appreciate your support in whatever form it takes. Thank you again!

Until next time,

Alida J. Bray

Spreading Some Halloween Fun
L ast month, after our Haunt History Park event, staff found a good way to use leftover pumpkins by donating them to students at Edenvale Elementary in South San Jose on Halloween. Teachers and staff setup a
pumpkin patch before the Pre-K and Kindergarten students arrived that morning, giving our extra pumpkins all good homes.
Catch it before it's gone - Tattooed & Tenacious: Inked Women in California's History

The exhibit explores Native American women proudly receiving tattoos as an important rite of passage, upper-class women who started the tattooing trend, the working-class Tattooed Ladies who graced the stages of circus sideshows, and some of the first female tattoo artists in California; as well as artwork from local contemporary female tattoo artists.

Tattooed & Tenacious: Inked Women in California's History is open Saturdays & Sunday from 11:00am - 4:30pm in the Leonard & David McKay Gallery at the Pasetta House in History Park. Exhibit Closes: Saturday, December 31, 2016.

A Long History of Voting
Sabastian and Amelia Albertoli, 1896 (Courtesy Nadine Nelson)
Check out our latest blog post on HSJ Collections Volunteer  Nadine Nelson, who recently discovered a voter registration form from her great-uncle, Sabastian Albertoli, in the HSJ Collection! The registration form dates back to November 2, 1876 - just in time to participate in one of America's most disputed Presidential elections. Read more here.

Thank You to Our Veterans!
Our Spirit of '45 volunteers and veterans were at History Park today getting ready for San Jose's Annual Veterans Day Parade. On behalf of History San José, we want to thank them and all of our veterans for their service and sacrifice to our country.

Goodbye Jim!
Jim with sock puppet from HSJ Collection.
Although we know Jim will thoroughly enjoy his well-earned retirement, we are still sad to say goodbye after 12 years at History San José. Jim Reed joined HSJ in 2004 and shortly thereafter became the Curator of Library & Archives. Over the years Jim transformed the Research Library and helped countless researchers locally and from 26 different countries. His accomplishments are too long to list here, but among the highlights are helping to secure winning NEH grants; leading volunteers to catalog all of our holdings to Library of Congress standards; cataloging more than 20,000 court records and thousands of estate records. He also provided research support for more than 75 books, and countless newspaper and magazine articles, films, and television stories. Goodbye Jim, we will miss you and your unique sense of humor.
