BronxWorks Celebrates Our Annual Staff Meeting by Recognizing Staff Milestone Years of Service, and Welcoming Deputy Mayor of Health and Human Services

Dr. Helen Arteaga as Guest Speaker

Earlier this month, BronxWorks once again held the annual All-Staff Meeting, bringing together over 1,000 employees across all departments. At the All-Staff Meeting, executive leadership shared the organization's growth and other successes from the past year and congratulated the staff for their tremendous work. Some achievements from 2025 that were shared include:

Over 35,000 new clients were enrolled across all programs.

Over 96,000 pounds of food were distributed across all BronxWorks pantries.

Over 550 individuals and families moved into permanent housing through BronxWorks Family Shelters and Adult Homeless Services.

Over 3,500 youth enrolled in BronxWorks Children & Youth programs.

Over 8,500 people received assistance with filing their tax return at BronxWorks and over 57% of those filers received a federal tax refund.

These are only a small part of the many accomplishments BronxWorks achieved in 2025. We are so thankful to all of our staff who make this work possible and demonstrate their commitment to the BronxWorks mission every day.

BronxWorks staff also had the opportunity to hear from Deputy Mayor of Health and Human Services Dr. Helen Arteaga, interviewed by Alex Francis, BronxWorks Executive Vice President of Supportive Housing and Homeless Services. Dr. Arteaga shared some of her motivations for her career in health and human services, including her family's struggle to access healthcare resources when she was younger due to a language barrier. She has since dedicated her career to providing equitable, accessible healthcare and other resources to New Yorkers. Dr. Arteaga also emphasized some of her goals as the new Deputy Mayor of Health and Human Services, including working more collaboratively with providers like BronxWorks to ensure we are on the same mission of uplifting vulnerable communities.

As part of the All-Staff Meeting, we also take time to recognize those who are achieving milestones in their career at BronxWorks. We are fortunate to have many staff with incredible tenure at the organization, including some who have reached 30, 35, and 40 years of service.

Robert Ealey and Ken Small

Celebrating 30 Years with BronxWorks

Robert Ealey

Driver, Willow Avenue Family Residence

Robert Ealey has spent over 30 years at BronxWorks committed to maintaining important facilities that provide critical programs. Robert was the Super of Willow Ave Family Residence for almost two decades, and worked tirelessly to ensure that over 100 families had a well-maintained residence while they worked towards stable housing. When Robert reached retirement, he missed working and returned as a Driver for the residence. He now has the opportunity to take clients to tour potential new apartments.

"This job has definitely been a learning experience for me. You don’t realize what people are going through or what led them to be there. I learned that you cannot be judgmental, you do not know their story."

Ken Small

Development Director

Ken Small started at BronxWorks in August of 1995 as the Development Director, the title he still holds today. He joined the organization with many years of experience in data analysis and writing in public service. For three decades, Ken has played a major role in the acquisition and stewardship of funding at BronxWorks that enables services for thousands of Bronxites. Over the years, he has also served as a mentor to many of his colleagues, interns, and fellow development staff.

"A big lesson I’ve learned at BronxWorks is that it’s important to work as a team. Anything that is done well at BronxWorks is done by a group of people working together.”

Miss Bronx Volunteers at BronxWorks Pantry

BronxWorks was thrilled to welcome Miss Bronx Ashley Cabreja to our Saturday Pantry! Ashley, a student at John Jay College and an EMS worker, is representing the Bronx in Miss New York 2026. She is a strong advocate for those facing poverty and homelessness in the Bronx, which led her to connect with BronxWorks. Ashley volunteered at our client-choice Saturday community food pantry, assisting clients with choosing and bagging their items.

BronxWorks Family Residence Hosts Resource Fair

With warmer weather finally upon us, the BronxWorks Jackson Avenue Family Residence hosted an outdoor resource fair for families to connect with local resources and providers. Staff from BronxWorks programs and other local organizations tabled the event and spoke with families about how they can best support their needs. BronxWorks family residences provide shelter, case management, childcare and after-school programming, and more to support families as they progress towards permanent housing.

BronxWorks Teen Participants Honored by NY Yankees

Three participants in the BronxWorks Work Learn Grow (WLG) program were honored with a New York Yankees Community Council Youth Leadership Award for their internship work at Claremont Neighborhood Center. During their internships, the participants supported initiatives to engage residents in the Claremont area, such as food distributions and a community book fair. We are so proud of our participants for their hard work and for this well-deserved recognition.

The Work, Learn, Grow (WLG) program builds off the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) and provides paid employment opportunities to young adults 16-21 years old from October to March. BronxWorks is grateful for our partners like the Claremont Neighborhood Center for providing enriching internship opportunities for our participants.

BronxWorks Hosts Career & Wellness Day for Middle Schoolers

BronxWorks Children & Youth Department held a Career and Wellness Day during spring break for our middle school participants. Students had the opportunity to learn about careers in studios and animation from CinemaKidz, a NYC-based youth arts program focused on filmmaking and media. They also enjoyed relaxing activities such as yoga and teddy bear making, and they ended the day with a friendly 3v3 basketball competition.

BronxWorks After-School Participants Join Bronx Soccer Tournament

BronxWorks Middle School programs at South Bronx Prep and Mott Haven Charter have joined a Bronx DYCD Soccer Tournament holding weekly games throughout the spring. Coordinated by the New York City Football Club, the league includes six teams from schools throughout the borough. This tournament is a fantastic way for our students to get outside, exercise, and form stronger bonds with their teammates. BronxWorks is wishing the best of luck to our participants as the tournament wraps up!
