Breaking Barriers
July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to recognize how racial and ethnic disparities continue to limit access to quality mental health care. At NCFamU, we see firsthand how these barriers affect the families and youth we serve. That’s why family voice, culturally responsive care, and system change are essential to building a future where everyone has access to mental health support.
For many minority families, the challenges go far beyond simply finding a provider. Language barriers, lack of culturally competent care, and stigma often stand in the way of accessing services. Transportation challenges and historical mistrust of health systems add to these obstacles. Together, these barriers contribute to lower rates of diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing support. As a result, families are often left feeling isolated, unheard, and without the resources they need to care for their mental health.
At NCFamU, we are committed to breaking down these barriers by elevating family voice, providing peer support, and advocating for mental health systems that reflect the communities they serve. Families deserve services that respect their culture, value their lived experience, and meet them where they are.
Apart from NCFamU’s peer support and advocacy services, the following national resources are available to help individuals and families find culturally responsive mental health information and support:

This Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, here are ways you can help make a difference:
- Start conversations about mental health in your community, especially with friends and family who may face stigma.
- Learn about culturally responsive mental health resources and share them with others.
- Support organizations like NCFamU that amplify family and community voices.
- Advocate for policies that promote mental health equity and expand access to care for marginalized communities.
- Listen to lived experience and honor the strength and resilience of families navigating these challenges.
Together, we can create a system where mental health care is accessible, inclusive, and centered on dignity for all.
💡 Resource Access Sidebar:
All of the resources listed above offer virtual options, including directories, educational content, podcasts, support groups, and in some cases, virtual therapy. Whether you’re seeking information or looking for culturally affirming care, these tools are available to help—no matter where you live.

Strength, Identity, and Inclusion
It's Disability Pride Month, a time to celebrate the diverse identities, experiences, and contributions of individuals with disabilities within our communities. Disability Pride is about recognizing strength, resilience, and the right to belong without apology or limitation.
At NCFamU, we know that individuals with disabilities, including youth and families we serve, bring unique talents, perspectives, and leadership to our communities. From self-advocates to artists, educators, entrepreneurs, and caregivers, people with disabilities enrich every space they are part of. Yet too often, stigma, exclusion, and systemic barriers still stand in the way of full participation.
| | This month and every month, we stand with individuals with disabilities and their families. We advocate for accessible services, inclusive spaces, and a culture that values every voice. Disability is not a deficit. It is a powerful part of human diversity. | | Men's Mental Health Month Recap | | |
On June 26th, NCFamU hosted a powerful panel discussion exploring men’s health—mind, body, and beyond.
Four men from our communities came together to share their personal health journeys, including the mental, emotional, and cultural experiences that have shaped them. Through honest conversation and lived experience, they broke stigma, shared real-life tools, and encouraged others to prioritize their health and well-being.
This important discussion provided education, support, and connection for men—as well as for those who care about them. If you missed it, be sure to visit the “Monthly Webinar” tab on our website to watch the recording of More than Muscle: A Men's Health Conversation.
