Charting Careers: What Sets Us Apart

Dear Charting Careers Friends, Families, and Supporters:

I am often asked, "What makes Charting Careers unique?" There are many answers to this important question, including:

  • Our incredible scholars and families
  • Our commitment to building trusting relationships
  • Our low overhead costs.

Another feature that sets us apart is that our programming is driven by a theory of change based in years of research about what works. Our work is guided by the Social Ecological Model of Health, a framework for prevention used by the Centers for Disease Control as well as the Task Force for Community Preventative Services.

The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the importance of simultaneously addressing individual, family, school, and community factors in order to successfully prevent problems and promote strengths.

With this guiding framework, we offer:

  1. Long-term educational, mentoring, and group programming to address individual and peer needs;
  2. Family partnership and brief mental health support to address family needs;
  3. Community Impact Teams to affect citywide change; and
  4. Partnership with AACPS as well as leadership of The Collaborative Supporting Youth to promote evidence-based policies around effective prevention and positive youth development.

Our work is not simple, but it is through this multi-method approach that lasting, positive changes can be achieved!

Please help us continue to provide life-transforming experiences by donating to our SPRING FORWARD 2023 fundraiser, which starts today and goes through Sunday March 12, when Daylight Saving Time starts. Bring some extra light through your generous gift!

With best wishes,

Erin Snell, PhD

Scholars Achieving Their Goals!

We love seeing scholars accomplishing their goals and improving and maintaining their grades! A HUGE shout out to all of our scholars who worked so hard last quarter, including a scholar who was named Student of the Month at Bates Middle School!

Ms. Candis, pictured above, supports middle school scholars every week as they monitor their grades in Power School, identify and turn in missing assignments, and reach out to teachers to meet individually to address learning gaps.

Families Making Small Steps and Huge Strides!

It isn't always easy to ask for support, and we are so grateful to parents and caregivers who are willing to trust us to be part of their team. Through this kind of partnership, families have:

  1. Worked through conflict,
  2. Attended IEP meetings with Charting Careers staff in attendance, and
  3. Initiated and engaged in mental health services.

If someone in your family needs assistance or you know of others who could use guidance, contact Stacey King, Family Partnership Coordinator, at stacey@chartingcareers.org or complete our Interest Form.

Supporting Students and Schools through

Career Exploration

We are thrilled to continue to broaden our impact and partner with Annapolis Middle School and the City of Annapolis to host a Career Day for all 7th graders at Annapolis Middle School on March 16th! This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about different career fields, meet professionals with diverse backgrounds, and practice college and career readiness skills.

If you are interested in being a guest speaker, please email Laticia@chartingcareers.org.

Community Impact Specialists, Inspiring Women

Across Annapolis

Maryland Hall Outreach’s Creating Communities 2023 Women's Leadership Conference - “I am She: The Art of a Successful Woman” led by Visionary Praze Princess Ronshaye Clark was an incredible event!

Through this Maryland Hall Outreach conference, Ms. Ron-Shaye Clark (who serves in many capacities across the City: Guest Artist with Maryland Hall, Charting Careers Community Impact Specialist, and Director of the REACH Program for the City) brought together women and girls from across Annapolis to inspire, build community, and further develop leadership skills. Two of our Charting Careers scholars were able to attend this event including a special, small-group session with a poet!

Charting Careers, through a grant from United Way of Central Maryland, was proud to play a small role by helping to sponsor the Friday Night Meet & Greet organized by Maryland Hall, Ms. Clark, and her counterpart, Ms. Renetra Anderson, Charting Careers Community Impact Specialist for the Greater Clay Street Community.
