Peterboro Celebrates Gerrit Smith, Underground Railroad, and Abolition March 4th

Gerrit Smith’s annual birthday party will be held at the Smithfield Community Center in Peterboro NY on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 2 pm, hosted by the Smithfield Community Association (SCA), the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark (GSENHL), and the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum (NAHOF). Born March 6, 1797, Smith was the wealthiest landowner in New York State and believed that his wealth was a divine gift to give away to the less fortunate –especially the enslaved.

Norman K. Dann, PhD will speak to the revisions of his 2009 biography of Practical Dreamer: Gerrit Smith and the Crusade for Social Justice and sign newly published editions. Dann will share information from his continuing research on Smith and his family which is included in the revised publication, as well as information for a forthcoming book on Gerrit Smith Miller.

As recently featured in the Times Union, the State Archives holds a Receipt Book, Land Grants From Gerrit Smith - a 122+page volume listing names, acres and locations: proof of a plan to give 3,000 Black people the wealth required for the right to vote in 1846 New York.

The third annual Albany Film Festival will be held at the University at Albany April 1. Be certain to attend the discussion on film censorship with Hackman Research Resident alumnae Laura Witter-Keller, Professor of History at the University at Albany, and Joshua Hauck-Whealton, archivist at the New York State Archives familiar with Motion Picture Division (MPD) licensing files held in its collections.
