Better Government Association, the Civic Federation and the League of Women Voters leaders wrote a letter demanding the council make it easier for Chicagoans to see proposed legislation and weigh in.

Three Chicago civic groups are calling on the City Council and Mayor Brandon Johnson to improve transparency and public access to council meetings so Chicagoans can more easily monitor and participate in city government.

Leaders of the Better Government Association, the Civic Federation and the League of Women Voters demanded the improvements in a letter submitted Thursday to Johnson; Ald. Michelle Harris (8th), the council’s rules committee chair; and members of that committee.

“The mayor and many council members have expressed a commitment to transparency, and now is the time to act to improve the way the City Council and its Committees do business and the public’s ability to participate in a meaningful way,” the groups wrote in the letter. “The goal should be to provide the public with opportunity both to know in a timely fashion what is being considered and to offer input on those matters.”

LOR1-copy-2 image

A combination pizzeria and jazz joint planned for a long-blighted stretch of 75th Street and a contemporary gallery in the Bronzeville Art District are among the South Side businesses approved for a piece of more than $30 million in city grants.

Ronrico Pizzeria and Jazz, 2135 E. 75th St. in South Shore, and Gallery Guichard, 436 E. 47th St. in Grand Boulevard, are among the 33 businesses in line for community development grants of up to $5 million. The pizzeria was approved for a $250,000 grant, while the gallery is set to receive $217,394.

The grants support commercial, mixed-use and light manufacturing projects, with priority going to developments in communities “where there is a history of disinvestment or limited private investment,” officials said.

Blacks in Green’s project to restore Emmett Till’s family home and the soon-to-launch Narrow Bridge Arts Club in Woodlawn are also in line for city community development grants.
