A MESSAGE FROM YALE VENTURES

Honoring Yale’s Faculty Innovators

This month we gathered to honor the recipients of the 2023 Yale Faculty Innovation Awards —14 Yale investigators whose brilliance and perseverance drove the translation of their laboratory discoveries into licensed startup companies with external funding. These awards are not only recognition for their entrepreneurial success but also an important signal that our university appreciates, recognizes, and celebrates Yale investigators who take on the extra strain and personal sacrifice to see their research take root in new startup companies that can change the world.

In President Salovey’s 2013 inaugural address, he encouraged us to do more to nurture student and faculty entrepreneurs across Yale and posed a question that we at Yale Ventures ask ourselves every day when we build programs, convene events, and develop resources for Yale faculty: “How can we better support interested faculty to develop and apply findings from their research? How can we create a local ecosystem that supports entrepreneurs?”

10 years later, we’ve made great progress but still have so many additional opportunities to help improve humanity. As members of Yale’s entrepreneurship and innovation community, we thank you for your partnership in this shared mission of supporting Yale innovation and its entrepreneurs who are determined to improve our world.

Yale Joins Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Biohub NY

Yale will be one of three partners that will form the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Biohub NY, a new biomedical research hub that will bring together the region’s experts at Columbia, Rockefeller University, and Yale to engineer immune cells to detect, monitor, and treat diseases earlier.

FreshAir Wristband

Faculty Founder: Krystal Pollitt, Assistant Professor, Yale School of Public Health

Dr. Pollitt's lab studies environmental exposure via the collection and analysis of complex environmental samples using mass spectrometry techniques. In addition to her research, Dr. Pollitt is an entrepreneur and, with her interdisciplinary team, has developed the FreshAir wristband, a wearable device that detects air pollution.

“Yale is a really fantastic hub of people to collaborate with and it's allowed me to work with people from engineering to public health, medicine, and architecture, to develop this concept.”
