Celebrating a Legacy

dFor decades, the Grinnell College Preschool has been a place where curiosity is nurtured,

community is built, and young learners take their first steps into a lifelong journey of discovery. This year, the College pauses to honor two individuals who have shaped that experience for generations of children and families — Karen Veerhusen-Langerud and Connie Molison — as they enter retirement.

Community Partner Spotlight

Pictured: Amy Durbin from Poweshiek County Conservation speaks with a Grinnell College Preschool class.

Poweshiek County’s natural spaces are more than places to explore — they are classrooms, gathering spaces, and sources of connection for the entire community. Through its stewardship of Diamond Lake Park and wildlife areas across the county, Poweshiek County Conservation helps ensure that people of all ages can experience the outdoors in meaningful, accessible ways.

The naturalist program, led by Amy Durbin, brings environmental education beyond park

boundaries and into classrooms, libraries, and community spaces. From school visits and field

trips to collaborations with groups like local libraries and the Bucket Course, Durbin’s outreach

meets people where they are. She also leads a wide range of public programs — from wildflower

hikes and kayaking to snowshoeing and hands-on art projects using natural or recycled

materials — all designed to spark curiosity and connection with the natural world.

Durbin is also a familiar face at the Grinnell College Preschool, where she regularly engages

young learners in outdoor discovery. “I love visiting the preschool — it’s so fun to hear what they

notice and get excited about,” she says. “When we talked about robins this spring, their observations were incredible.”

Students Speak

“Working at the preschool has been one of biggest highlights of my Grinnell experience. Spending time with the preschoolers has always been so fulfilling. One of my favorite parts of work is getting to see the world through a preschooler’s eyes! They have such incredible, and often humorous, insights on the world around us. Seeing them learn and grow has been an honor, and it truly motivated me to strive or a career working with young children.”

Did You Know?

How Grinnellians Get Jobs

Grinnell College’s Center for Careers, Life, and Services (CLS) surveys each graduating class to find out where they end up after Grinnell and what kinds of experiences — internships, research, civic engagement, and more — they had during their time here. We ask those graduates not just where they’ll be employed, but also how they found their jobs. Here are insights from the last several years of these surveys.

Iowa Rural Development Summit

On April 9–10, five representatives from Grinnell attended the 10th Annual Iowa Rural Summit in Dubuque: Monica St. Angelo of the Grinnell Area Arts Council; Rachael Kinnick of the Grinnell Area Chamber of Commerce; Melissa Strovers of Poweshiek Economic Development Collaborative; and Sarah Smith and Libby Eggert of Grinnell College (pictured above, left to right). Organized by the Iowa Rural Development Council and led by Executive Director Bill Menner, a longtime Grinnell resident, the summit brought together over 400 rural leaders from across Iowa to share insights on their communities and what makes them thrive.
