FROM THE STUDENTS' PERSPECTIVE

After-School Tutoring Program

This spring saw the beginning of a new after-school tutoring program in math

and literacy. Thirty-six students have joined the program taking one or two classes a week. The program has 11 tutors who usually work with two students at a time. Spanish-dominant students are paired with Spanish dominant tutors. This small group approach is designed to help students who are experiencing difficulty in math or literacy to have help conquer their difficulties. This is what two 9th grade students, who come twice weekly to the tutoring sessions, have to say: Emma, one student says “This tutoring is helping me to raise my grades”. Aralis, another student, said “It is so helpful, because it is helping me to learn and understand more about the topic. Both of these students are English Language Learners.

EXTRAORDINARY EXPEDITION

Culinary Arts Pathway

This year a new career pathway began at the Muniz Academy in partnership with

New England Center for Culinary Arts (NECAT). It began with a 12th grader, Alexis, whose dream it is to become a chef.

Alexis had been working after school in a restaurant for a year and during that time realized that he wanted to continue in that line of work and become a chef. He spoke with Madeira Thayer, the Career Pathways Coordinator, about this and she quickly called on NECAT. While there Alexis has taken the ServSafe courses and studied all that is needed for state certification, which includes a lot of math and science. He then began his kitchen course which involves all that he loves. He wants to learn as much as he can about all the different styles of cooking. He is Salvadorean and working in a Scottish restaurant, so at present, he is getting those two cuisines under his belt. He graduates from NECAT in May and then from MMA in June. He is so motivated and happy in the career path that he has chosen.

He has paved the way for others to follow in this pathway should they choose. There is already an 11th grader ready to step into that path next year.

CLASSROOM HIGHLIGHTS

Zona De Logros

This last month has seen the students assiduously preparing for their Zona de Logros (Achievements Space) presentations to take place at the end of April. Zona de Logros is a practice wherein the students are given time to step back, reflect and analyze what they have learned in each of their classes. They then have an opportunity to share their work, with their peers and others and explain why they are proud of it. It gives students an opportunity to take responsibility for their learning find their own voice. This process takes place at the end of each quarter and gives them practice being a presenter.

Zona de Logros is an ongoing training and preparation for when students are seniors and need to give their Portfolio presentation which is a requirement for graduation.
