VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Leslie Lewis

Leslie Lewis is a long-time volunteer at Lake Ridge Fellowship House (LRFH) who leads craft sessions and delivers food through the Fellowship Fresh program. Years ago, Mrs. Lewis worked at LRFH, first as an evening receptionist and later as part of the security team. When she stopped working at Fellowship House, she realized she missed the community at Lake Ridge and decided to remain involved. In fall of 2004, Mrs. Lewis began to host a card-making club for LRFH residents. During the height of COVID, Mrs. Lewis was not able to hold her club in person, so she distributed card-making kits to residents. Recently, she has started transitioning back to in-person gatherings.

Mrs. Lewis has remained involved with Fellowship Square for so long because she has a positive relationship with many of the people at Lake Ridge Fellowship House, which she says she “would consider just friendship as much as anything else.” She also gets a lot of joy out of helping residents – she loves to hear about residents giving the cards they made to friends and family. She considers it a three-way win – residents win with an activity they enjoy, she wins by sharing a hobby she loves, and family and friends win with a hand-made greeting from their loved one.
NEW BOARD MEMBER
Welcome Parween Nooruddin
to the Hunters Woods Fellowship House board of directors!
Headshot of Parween
Parween Nooruddin is originally from Afghanistan and moved to the United States in 2001 from Russia. She grew up in Fairfax, Virginia, and attended Robinson Secondary School (Go Rams!). She is the middle child of five, and grew up having a very close relationship with her mother and her aunts.

Parween joined the senior housing industry in 2015 and has enjoyed every moment of it. She started out as a human resource coordinator for a small startup home care company, and later joined Hunters Woods at Trails Edge (another senior housing community) as a staff member in December 2020. She currently she serves as its Assistant Executive Operations Officer and is a licensed Assisted Living Administrator.

Her educational background is in healthcare administration and says her favorite part of the day is when she gets to spend time with residents and staff. She has created bonds not only with her residents, but with their families as well – she says the joy she gets from knowing that they put their trust in her is beyond words. Throughout her employment at Hunters Woods at Trails Edge, she has worked closely in partnership with Fellowship Square on several initiatives to support the residents at Hunters Woods Fellowship House and the organization as a whole. She is excited to continue her service as a board member.

Parween enjoys being outdoors, traveling, and is a huge football fan
(Go Patriots!).
RESIDENT LIFE
August is National Immunization Awareness Month
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), pneumonia and influenza rank in the top ten causes of death for seniors. People over 65 who have chronic conditions, such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), are particularly encouraged to become vaccinated as they are at a greater risk for developing serious, life-threatening complications from these diseasesMedicare may cover the cost of these vaccines: flu, pneumococcal, hepatitis B, shingles, MMR (measles), and Tdap.

Seniors can live a longer and healthier life, as well as prevent the spread of disease, by making sure their immunizations are current.

CHRISTY'S CORNER
Warm Hearts, Full Bellies
Housing is our biggest program, but it is not the only critical need we fill. In the last 12 months, our Fellowship Fresh program has delivered 114,800 pounds of nutritious food and prepared meals to 850+ seniors that call Fellowship House home.

As we age, there can be significant challenges in obtaining healthy food on a consistent basis. Mobility, transportation and even being able to carry groceries can be insurmountable for many. In addition, the increasing costs of many staples make it unlikely that our residents can afford a full cupboard of food.

Fellowship Fresh was fortunate to recruit 133 volunteers that have helped deliver food door to door to our residents. We received food donations totaling $205,500 from local Churches, restaurants, and the USDA Brown Bag food program. Our seniors rely on these deliveries for their monthly groceries. Senior hunger and food insecurity is an on-going problem across the country. At Fellowship Square, we respond to this challenge by ensuring that food is regularly delivered to residents who need it, and we always respond to residents who face emergency food shortages. No one goes without a meal at Fellowship Square.

I greatly appreciate all our donors and volunteers who made Fellowship Fresh a successful program this year. If you would like to get involved, please visit our website for more information.

With gratitude,
Christy Zeitz
