On Sunday 4 October 2026 FaithWorks celebrated our 30th anniversary with a moving Evensong at St. James' Cathedral and a reception in Snell Hall. The reception will be covered in next week's edition of FaithLines.
We were inspired by our guest homilist, The Reverend Canon Doctor Alison Falby, currently the Incumbent of Christ Church, Deer Park and formerly the Incumbent and Executive Director of All Saints Church - Community Centre, Sherbourne St. The following is an excerpt from her homily, based on the Gospel according to Matthew 25:31-46.
“While individual [FaithWorks ministry] partners may specialize in different services, all welcome strangers. All offer belonging and friendship. In this, they embody the good news at the heart of today’s Gospel passage. And this good news is that when we meet the needs of others, we meet our friend Jesus: the risen Christ.
When the sheep care for other sheep in need, they also care for their shepherd: the King, in today’s passage. And the same can be said of Christians and the Church. When we care for the so-called “least” among us — the hungry, thirsty, lonely, naked, sick, and imprisoned — we care for Christ’s own body, and the reign of God comes closer. That is the Church: Christ’s body in the world.
The image of sheep tending Christ’s body is an image of a faithful Church. Attending to the weaker members of that body is the work of faith. Hence the name “FaithWorks”: coined 30 years ago by Ward McCance, a Diocesan volunteer.
FaithWorks makes it possible for Anglicans across our Diocese — from Mississauga to Brighton to Haliburton — to pool our resources and meet many more needs of many more people than we could as individual people or individual parishes. Collectively, FaithWorks’ different ministry partners do all the things that Jesus lists in the Gospel of Matthew, and more.”
