Celebrating new affordable housing in Farmington, ME

On Feb. 25, we celebrated the opening of Edgewater Village – 25 beautiful new affordable homes for ages 55 and older!

Last week’s event featured guest speakers Sen. Russell Black (R-Franklin), MaineHousing Director Dan Brennan, Farmington Town Manager Erica LaCroix, and David Stolt, senior vice president and director of residential and consumer lending with Franklin Savings Bank. Special acknowledgement was given to Byron “Buzz” Davis and Bill Marceau, who held the land under option with Avesta for five years so that Edgewood could become a reality, and WNC & Associates, our LIHTC syndicator and event sponsor.

Open houses scheduled for Clover Terraces

Gardner Real Estate Group is hosting informational open houses every weekend through early May for Clover Terraces, our first Domus housing development for middle-income homebuyers in Maine.

Scheduled to open in 2027, Clover Terraces will provide 45 single-bedroom, luxury-grade condominiums in the heart of downtown Westbrook. Each unit comes equipped with private decks, reserved parking, and a focus on sustainable comfort, and presents a new pathway to homeownership without high mortgage debt or costly renovations.

All open houses will be held at Hebert Construction, 15 Baxter Blvd., Portland. No appointment is necessary. Click here for more information and to view the schedule.

Construction Updates

Seavey Crossing in Westbrook is more than halfway finished and is on track to open this summer. Windows have been installed, and electrical and plumbing work is underway. This community will create 61 new affordable homes for individuals ages 55 and older.

In Lewiston, construction on DeWitt is progressing well and is on schedule to finish late this year. All five stories of the first building are fully framed, and the roof is nearly complete. Steel and decking for the second building are in place, and vertical construction is underway.

Avesta is developing DeWitt in partnership with Lewiston Housing Authority; this community will provide 104 affordable homes for families.

Our largest development currently in progress – 89 Elm Street Apartments in downtown Portland – is about 23% complete, and wall panels on the second story are being installed. 89 Elm will provide 201 affordable homes for individuals and families and is scheduled for completion in early 2027.

Avesta advocates to protect and expand affordable housing

Last month, President & CEO Jennifer Hawkins testified in support of L.D. 2212, a bill before the Maine Legislature that would provide an additional $70 million to address the most pressing housing needs for low- and middle-income Mainers. “Maine needs bold action and consistent investment to build homes that Maine families and seniors can afford,” Jennifer said. At the municipal level, Avesta has joined other nonprofits in Portland to urge city councilors to reject action that would impose significant financial burdens on charitable organizations by revoking their tax-exempt status and creating a program that would pressure nonprofits to provide payment to the City in lieu of taxes. We have appealed the former, and the city council has postponed a vote on the latter.

Avesta awarded Maine Preservation and ‘Best of 207’ awards

In February, our work on the historic Dr. Milton Wedgewood House in Lewiston was named one of 10 honorees to receive Maine Preservation’s Honor Award.

Built in the 1870s, the Wedgewood House was rapidly deteriorating when Avesta preserved it as part of the Wedgewood campus, an affordable housing community that we developed in partnership with Lewiston Housing Authority and completed last fall. The Honor Award will be presented on March 18 at a ceremony at the Stevens Square Community Center in Portland.

This is the second preservation award given to the Wedgewood House – last year, it received an Excellence in Historic Preservation Award from the Lewiston Historic Preservation Review Board.

And the awards keep coming! Our Inn at Village Square in Gorham was awarded a bronze medal for assisted living in the Health & Beauty category of Portland Media Group’s “Best of the 207” awards for 2025. This is IVS’ third “Best of the 207” award, and the fact that nominations and voting are done by the public makes it especially meaningful.

Avesta Housing's mission is to improve lives and strengthen communities by promoting and providing quality affordable homes for people in need.
