We kicked off a new affordable home development in Los Angeles—and at both the national and local level, we announced our commitment to advancing Black homeownership.
This month we celebrated Juneteenth and Pride Month as well—and wished all the dads, grandpas, and father figures a happy Father’s Day!

Earlier this month, Habitat for Humanity announced a slate of new programs and funding opportunities aimed at dismantling the systemic bias that permeates America’s mortgage, lending, and exclusionary zoning practices—practices that have prevented generations of Black families from accessing the intergenerational wealth-building potential of homeownership.
While our country continues to grapple with a long-overdue reckoning on racial justice, the reality is that there can be no racial justice without housing justice.

Raising the First Wall!
Construction begins on the Isabel Villas development

When Habitat LA gathered this month with donors, volunteers, and special guests at the site of our latest affordable housing project, it was to raise the first wall of an 8-home development, with the hope that each house built here will become a safe and loving home for a future Habitat LA homeowner.
The new development was christened Isabel Villas in honor of Habitat LA’s Chief of Staff, Isabel Lee, who recently celebrated her 20-year anniversary with Habitat LA.
According to site supervisor David Duarte, the eight homes will each include three bedrooms and two baths as well as a slate of energy efficient and planet friendly features including low flow plumbing fixtures, solar energy systems, and drought tolerant yards. When complete, the homes be move-in ready for each of the families.

Whose house? Rams house (for the day)!
Following the wall raising celebration, we welcomed the Los Angeles Rams 2022 rookie class to Isabel Villas. They spent the day volunteering on the build site where they helped with framing, applying woodwork, and raising additional walls. The Rams will open training camp on July 23, with both veterans and rookies reporting on that date. Go Rams!

Oh-So-Dreamy Playhouses 🏠

As we shared in February, Mattel and Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) have partnered for a year-long, international collaboration in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Barbie® Dreamhouse™.
Part of Mattel’s 60-project commitment with HFHI includes working with Habitat LA on at least 20 of those projects, including support for Isabel Villas and as presenting sponsor of the 2022 Power Women Power Tools® event. “We’re incredibly grateful to have partnered with Mattel for more than a decade and are thrilled to be a part of the Barbie Dreamhouse journey in our own unique way,” said Helen Dosta, Habitat LA’s VP Resource Development.
Our Habitat LA staff and volunteers loved working alongside Mattel and Barbie employees at the Barbie Playhouse Build event earlier this month. Under the watchful eyes of Habitat LA construction leaders, the teams assembled and painted 10 playhouses! Once the paint dries, the playhouses will find their forever homes through various channels. They may be gifted to partner families with young children, donated to other non-profits or community groups that serve children, or sold at Habitat LA ReStores—with proceeds supporting Habitat LA’s mission to help children and their families to have a safe place to call home.
"A partnership between Barbie, Mattel and Habitat LA reflects the significant commitment of two leading organizations to reinvest in greater Los Angeles, ultimately helping to change the lives of local, low-income families and individuals in need of decent, sustainable, and affordable homes,” added Dosta.
