Celebrating the 82nd Anniversary

of the USS Bowfin

This December marks the 82nd anniversary of the USS Bowfin (SS-287), a milestone that honors the pivotal role of American submariners in helping turn the tide of the War In The Pacific during World War II. Launched on December 7, 1942, one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the USS Bowfin (SS-287), she was appropriately dubbed as the "Pearl Harbor Avenger."

The USS Bowfin (SS-287) earned its place as one of the U.S. Navy's most successful submarines during World War II. With nine successful patrols, it became renowned for sinking 16 enemy vessels. The submarine’s missions, which ranged from reconnaissance to rescue operations, were carried out with precision and courage, earning it a lasting legacy. The Bowfin continues to represent the Navy’s “Silent Service.”

As we reflect on the anniversary of the USS Bowfin (SS-287), we remember the brave submariners who served under extreme conditions. Often submerged for weeks at a time with limited communication, these sailors faced constant danger and uncertainty. Their dedication and bravery were instrumental in the success of the Pacific campaign and the eventual victory of the United States in World War II.

Answering The Call: Pearl Harbor Remembrance

As Pearl Harbor survivors and members of the Greatest Generation pass away, their legacy lives on with the next generation of service members. Younger service members are playing a more active role in the Pearl Harbor anniversary commemoration rituals. Mahalo to the Punahou School JROTC squad for visiting our museum grounds to read the names of our brave men who made the ultimate sacrifice on December 7, 1941. And thanks to all of the Greatest Generation who served during World War II.

Thanking Our Supporters

2024 was another milestone year at the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum! We celebrated our 11 millionth museum visitor with the Jordan family from Australia. Our museum won a third Museum Excellence Award from the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) in presenting the U.S. Navy’s legacy through exceptional programs, exhibits, artifact conservation, and historical research.

We worked with the community in honoring our brave sailors who served in combat, and provided assistance for students pursuing trade careers – fields that are critical to Hawaiʻi’s shipyard and maritime industries.

All of this would not be possible without the help of our museum visitors and partners in the military and local and business community. The Pacific Fleet Submarine Memorial Association thanks you for your support as we look forward to 2025.
