Celebrating the Feast of Pentecost
at Saint Mark’s Cathedral
THIS SUNDAY, MAY 31

On May 31, the Church observes the Feast of Pentecost. While social distancing may change the look of some of our celebrations, nothing can stop the Holy Spirit from transforming our lives and the life of the Church. This year, there are lots of ways to catch that Pentecost Spirit at Saint Mark’s!

BEFORE SUNDAY
Decorate your home altar with a red cloth if you have one, and place symbols of Baptism and the Holy Spirit on it. A candle brings to mind the flames of the Spirit—if you happen to have the candle presented to you at your Baptism available, bring it out! Other images of the Holy Spirit include: birds, wind, water, oil, fruit, and more. Think creatively about how the Divine Spirit might best be represented to you! In addition, place a small bowl of water and a fragrant branch of your favorite herb to be used during the Sunday liturgy. Take a picture of your Pentecost altar and share it on Facebook or email them to info@saintmarks.org .

PRAYERFULLY REFLECT ON THE BAPTISMAL COVENANT
The promises we made (or were made on our behalf) at our Baptism, and which we renew at each Baptismal liturgy during the year, articulate the core of what it means to follow Christ. Before the Pentecost celebration, you are invited to take a moment to read through them—they may be found in our Book of Common Prayer , p. 304, or at this link . What is one promise you feel called to practice with intention at this moment? Write it down; then on Sunday place that note on your altar during the Offertory.

ON SUNDAY MORNING, MAY 31
Put on your favorite  red  outfit before the service begins and post a picture of yourself to the cathedral’s  Facebook  community page or email it to  info@saintmarks.org . We'll put the photos we receive together into a collage!

Then, j oin the livestream a few minutes early (about 10:45 a.m.) for another special slide show. Have your water and herbs ready to use during the service. The service will contain some special elements. Listen with care to the readings, and offer your voice along so many others as we sing and pray and give thanks to God!

SUNDAY AFTERNOON
For many years, a Pentecost tradition at Saint Mark's has been, following the Sunday service, to "run, ride, or roll" around Green Lake, wearing festive red clothes and with bikes and scooters festooned with red ribbons and streamers. The event would conclude with root beer floats. This type of celebration is not possible at this time, but why not recreate it in miniature, alone or with your household? Decorate your favorite mode of transport and take your celebrations outside! Ride, run, or stroll through your neighborhood. Decorate your yard or balcony. Notice the feel of the wind and the sun. Enjoy festive cake and floats. Don't forget to take pictures and share them on Facebook or email them to info@saintmarks.org .
Earth Ministry
EARTH MINISTRY
Webinar: From Active Hope to Embodied Hope

SUNDAY, MAY 31, 2–4 P.M., via Zoom. Learn more and register here .

Based on the book Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We're in Without Going Crazy  by Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone, this Zoom gathering will offer an experiential pathway to help address our climate grief and envision the future we want to bring into being. The discussion, led by Rev. Marilyn Cornwell and Rev. Terry Teigen and psychotherapist Francie Rutherford, will offer a process for navigating what the future holds. We'll begin the work of equipping ourselves by naming our grief, seeing with new eyes, and taking steps to embody the active hope Macy and Johnstone envision. Learn more and register here . ( Note: This is not an official cathedral event, although Earth Ministry is a partner organization with longstanding ties to Saint Mark's. )

Creation Care Ministry Update

NEXT MINISTRY MEETING:
MONDAY JUNE 8, 6:30 P.M., via Zoom

Have your eating habits changed during the pandemic? Cooking at home more? Consider exploring less meat-centric, more vegetarian options. Shifting to a diet rich in plants is a demand-side solution to global warming that is also healthier. The meat-centric diets of the world account for one-fifth of global emissions. Eating less beef reduces the demand for production, thereby reducing land clearing, fertilizer use, burping cattle, and greenhouse gas emissions. Project Drawdown ( www.drawdown.org) researchers project that worldwide, by 2050, 65.01–91.72 gigatons of CO2 could be reduced/sequestered if efforts were put in place to reduce the consumption of beef. Email kkrida01@yahoo.com or marjorie@ringness.org for the Zoom link.
Compline with the Seattle Service Corps

THURSDAYS THROUGH JUNE 25, 7:15 P.M., via Zoom

Sanctuary News – Are You on the List?

The situation for immigrants and refugees is increasingly difficult, and our paying attention, responding to calls for emails and phone calls to our legislators, getting involved where we can, and praying for all affected is now more important than ever . The group Sanctuary at Saint Mark’s receives updates on what’s going on locally and at the border—and here with our own family in Sanctuary—from Canon Nancy Ross. Everyone who is interested, regardless of their level of engagement in the Sanctuary Ministry, is encouraged to sign up for these mailings to stay informed. If you’re not already on the Sanctuary mailing list, and you want to receive these occasional email updates, please email nross@saintmarks.org .
Casa Latina Workers Need Work!

We can now support our friends at Casa Latina, who have been hit extremely hard by the pandemic shut-down!  The Day Workers Center has opened  on a limited basis, with strict policies to follow Governor Inslee’s  “Safe Start Plan,”  and is now taking work orders related to  landscape services  and  outdoor maintenance .  If you have tasks around your yard that need to be done, there are people ready and willing—and needing the work! So many of us appreciated the Forums and Cathedral Commons when members from our partner Casa Latina came and shared their personal stories of immigration—and their difficulties and resilience and activism for worker rights—with us. If you have work, that is the best way to support the community in these times. Rest assured that Casa Latina’s priority is to ensure the safety of worker-members and employers as the Day Workers Center re-opens. All the details are here:  https://casa-latina.org/get-involved/hire-worker . Please consider supporting the livelihood of these neighbors.

Canon Cristi Chapman ( cchapman@saintmarks.org ) or Nicole Silvernale, ( nsilvernale@saintmarks.org ) by Monday, June 1.

A note on Zoom links...

We have all very quickly become used to using the Zoom teleconferencing platform in so many areas of our lives, from work meetings to classes to socializing. At the same time, the phenomenon of " Zoom bombing ," when uninvited guests invade meeting to cause disruption, has become a real threat. The nature of the disruption has in some instances gone well beyond the level of mere practical jokes. For this reason we must become more careful about openly posting Zoom links in public . (This includes this weekly Sundays & Beyond email, which is made publicly available .) All Zoom meetings and events will be publicized with the organizer's email address. Please do not hesitate to write a very brief email, and they will respond with the link to join. If at any time it is unclear how to get the link, simply email info@saintmarks.org . Thank you for your understanding.
