ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU for your continuing support of our Cathedral Vincentians during these challenging times. From January to June 2023, your donations allowed us to assist 373 households in the neighborhoods surrounding St James Cathedral who struggle to pay for life’s necessities. For the first six months of this year, we have given rent assistance to 214 households, an average of 36 households per month. So far this year nearly 90% of our financial aid in the central Seattle neighborhoods we serve has gone to pay rent. We are deeply grateful for every dollar you share with SVdP – thank you! Information, Jo Ann Wiesner, 206-291-4012 or wiesnerjo@gmail.com.
TOILETRY DONATIONS If you are traveling and staying at a hotel, consider bringing the small toiletries back to St. James. There is a donation bin located in the Cathedral Bookstore. Our St. Vincent de Paul conference packages the toiletries and distributes them to those in need. Thank you!
CARE FOR CREATION TIP OF THE WEEK Let Justice and Peace Flow is the theme for this fall’s upcoming Season of Creation. In his annual message for this holy season, Pope Francis encourages us: “Let us live, work and pray that our common home will teem with life once again. May the Holy Spirit once more hover over the waters and guide our efforts to ‘renew the face of the earth’ (cf. Ps 104:30)”. Consider learning more about salmon restoration in the Pacific Northwest. Salmon are a keystone species to our region, essential to ecosystems, wildlife, and the lives of many people who live here today and for time immemorial. To learn more, read the Intercommunity Peace and Justice Center’s most recent edition of their journal at www.ipjc.org/a-matter-of-spirit.
SUPPORT THE SOLANUS CASEY CENTER Named after Franciscan priest Father Solanus Casey, the Center (a joint ministry of Catholic Community Services and St. James Cathedral) is a walk-in referral center that provides services to the unemployed, working poor, people just released from detention, and those living on the streets, shelters, and transitional housing. The Center also offers modest financial assistance as funds allow. In particular, it is one of the few agencies in Seattle that will help pay for ID cards and provide assistance with necessary background paperwork. The Center is open Monday to Friday, 1pm to 4pm. To volunteer, Adriana Henry, Program Manager, 206-223-0907 or AdrianaH@ccsww.org.
JOIN THE CATHEDRAL GARDEN TEAM The St. James Cathedral Kitchen Garden, which provides fresh produce for the weeknight meals served at Cathedral Hall, welcomes volunteers to help with planting, weeding, maintenance, pruning & harvesting. The garden is located on the corner of Madison & Terry. Information: Peter Burns, pburns@stjames-cathedral.org or 206-264-2082.
