CELEBRATING THE KING'S CORONATION

Hi Jenny,

As the day of King Charles III's Coronation is almost upon us, the conversation around the expected fashions has heightened with interest. After all, the last royal occasion we witnessed on such a grand scale was Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation, so we're excited by the prospects of gilded glitz and glamour - just like our Romantics! Bring on the "Carolean" era in style. So what splendour can we expect from Charles?

DRESS FOR THE OCCASION

Naturally, there will be rich velvets and dazzling jewels - and that's just from the St Edward’s Crown. But could it be a colourful affair with displays of the white, red and blue of the official emblem? Royal blue, a go-to colour for the royals since the age of Queen Charlotte, denotes authority and trust. Whilst red conveys power and commands attention. Plus, we'll no doubt see Royal purple, long associated with regal authority, evidenced in the Robe of State.

Charles has asked for the ceremony to be 'pared back' and asked the Lords not to wear their ceremonial robes but 'standard business attire.' The traditional colour is still relevant for the men and suits will probably be navy, grey and black, not the 'country colours' of brown and green. A well-fitting collar and quality tie will provide jugular protection and the shoes will most likely be black Oxford shoes.

For womenswear, it'll be interesting to see how many choose a more formal plain fabric and structured outfit. But, hopefully, some will feel freer to dress their individuality with a more fluid style - if that works for their body shape and personality.

As in everyday life, accessories are of the utmost importance. Remember your Dressing Points (points of interest) from Personal Style? Additions could be a quality necklace providing jugular protection, a stylish handbag; and shoes are a great way of showing personality. Brooches will be out in full force, worn of course high on the left just like medals. And, hopefully, strong lipsticks will bring contrast to the colouring on the big day.

Whatever the sartorial statements. they will have been carefully managed. After all, everything you wear sends a message, and the vestiary choices will signify to the world that a new reign is upon us.

Unlike in the Elizabethan age of the sumptuary laws, which dictated the clothing you could buy and wear according to your social status to stop people from dressing up as something they were not, we live without such restrictions. There is, somewhat, freedom in representing yourself according to your lifestyle, but it's not always easy to discover your style.
