Greetings!
Many of you have heard by now about the death of Phi Theta Kappa Board of Directors Member and Texas Regional Coordinator Dr. Mary Hood. Mary died on Thursday, April 21, following a courageous battle against leukemia. She was diagnosed with the disease following last year's Honors Institute. In Mary we lost a courageous lady, friend, and leader. While leukemia took her physical presence from us, that void will be forever filled by the passionate and compassionate spirit she revealed each day. Our thoughts and prayers remain with Mary's husband Duane, their twin daughters, grandchildren and the Texas Region as they mourn her loss. |

Duane and Mary's daughters have announced that A Celebration of Life program will be held in Mary's honor this Saturday, April 30, from 4:00 - 7:00 pm (CST) at the Acton United Methodist Church in Granbury, Texas. At the family's invitation I will be in attendance and officiate at the service.
Additionally, they have requested that any memorial donations be sent to the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation. In consultation with Dr. Nancy Rieves, Executive Director of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation, we will direct these gifts toward establishing the "Mary Hood Leaders of Promise Scholarship Endowment" for the Texas Region.
We will invite Duane and daughters Denise and Deanne to attend next year's Annual Convention in Nashville for a commemoration of Mary's leadership in Phi Theta Kappa and to formalize the establishment of the endowment. Funds from memorial gifts and Convention scholarship pin donations received during the 2012 Nashville Convention will be directed to the Mary Hood Leaders of Promise Endowment. We hope to award the first scholarship in 2012. If you wish to make a gift in memory of Mary, you may do so online or by calling the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation at 601.987.5507.
To the right you will find the address of the church where the Celebration of Life program will be held as well as Dr. Duane Hood's address for expressions of condolence. There will be a private burial Thursday and a small memorial for Western Texas College colleagues will be held in Snyder, Texas on Sunday, where Duane and Mary spent most of the professional lives. Dr. Randy Allison, advisor of the Alpha Phi Lambda Chapter at Blinn College - Bryan Campus, and Mary's daughter, Denise Hood Hattox, have graciously provided a list of hotels in Granbury, also listed at right, with links for your convenience should you wish to attend the Memorial Service. If you have any questions, please contact me at 601.984.3520 or rod.risley@ptk.org.
Sincerely, Rod A. Risley, Ph.D.
