100 Black Men call for people to join them in working with children

On Wednesday, October 7, the 100 Black Men of Macon-Middle Georgia held a press conference as a call to the community to come together and be involved with mentoring and supporting children and families. Garrett Williams, President of the 100 Black Men, and the assembled groups encouraged parents to be more involved in their children’s lives, people to take up mentoring children, and others to volunteer with the groups working every day in the neighborhoods.

“Macon is strengthened when organizations, institutions, and citizens come together with a common purpose,” said Williams. “Through partnership, accountability, and collective action, we can continue to build safer neighborhoods and a brighter future for all.”

The call to action came in Carolyn Crayton Park (CCP), near the site of the recent shootings. The 100 Black Men have long been involved in working with children in Macon, including recent years where they have focused on mentoring, development, and education programs at Bruce Elementary and Southwest High School.

“Incidents of violence that threaten the safety and well-being of our residents are deeply troubling and impact the entire community,” said Williams, adding that the work doesn’t start after an incident but should start when children are young. “Mentoring is a lifetime endeavor, and that begins with elementary school.”

The 100 Black Men of Middle Georgia has adopted Bruce Elementary to help provide students life skills, additional educational support, and outside opportunities. They have taken students to New Orleans and New York City, chaperoned them to different sites and events around Middle Georgia, provided literacy incentives, offered student financial literacy classes, hosted etiquette luncheons, provided job interview sessions, and support the Cub Scout Pack based at the school. They have also selected 32 students at Southwest High School for one-on-one mentoring with 100 Black Men members as part of its Rights of Passage program.

“We do have challenges that need to be addressed. Violence not only harms individuals and families, it also undermines the sense of security and unity that is essential to a strong and vibrant community,” Williams said, pointing out it this will require them, every other organization in town, and, very importantly, parents and families. “We have to communicate a sense of urgency.”

100 Black Men is also a Macon Violence Prevention (MVP) partner and grant recipient, helping implement programs that support youth development, mentorship, and education as part of the community-wide effort to reduce violence and create more opportunities for young people in Macon-Bibb County.

This time, he's sharing updates on the Industrial Authority's work to attract new businesses, support existing industries, and create more opportunities for our community.

Dozens of Hispanic residents gathered for the special recognition, representing a wide range of backgrounds, professions, and countries. Among those in attendance were local business owners, educators, law enforcement officers, media professionals, faith leaders, and families who help make Macon-Bibb County the diverse community it is today.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from September 15 through October 15, honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. The celebration also highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for people of different cultures and backgrounds to come together, share their traditions, and learn from one another.

The recognition comes as Macon-Bibb County prepares for the 5th Annual Macon-Bibb Hispanic Festival, happening Saturday, October 24, from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Cherry Street Plaza in Downtown Macon.

The free, family-friendly festival will feature live music, dancing, authentic food, Hispanic-owned businesses, children's activities, and more. The event is open to everyone and is designed to celebrate Hispanic culture while bringing the entire community together.

Now in its fifth year, the festival continues to grow, providing a space for Hispanic families, entrepreneurs, and community members to share their culture and celebrate the contributions they make to Macon-Bibb County.

Macon-Bibb honors longtime Housing Authority leader with “Mike Austin Day”

After nearly three decades of serving the Macon-Bibb community, Macon Housing Authority CEO Mike Austin is being recognized for his leadership and dedication to providing affordable housing opportunities for local families.

On Thursday, October 8, Mayor Lester Miller officially proclaimed the day as “Mike Austin Day” in Macon-Bibb County, honoring Austin's years of service and the lasting impact he has made on the community.

Throughout his career, Austin has helped guide the Macon Housing Authority through significant growth and change, overseeing hundreds of millions of dollars in housing and community investments. Under his leadership, the Authority has expanded access to quality, affordable housing and earned national recognition for its innovation and responsible management.

The Macon Housing Authority has repeatedly received the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) designation as a "High Performer." It also became one of the first public housing authorities in the country to complete a Rental Assistance Demonstration conversion, an achievement recognized by HUD.

But Austin's impact goes far beyond housing developments and investments. His work has helped provide thousands of individuals and families with something even more important: a safe, stable place to call home.

"Mike Austin has dedicated his career to making sure more families in our community have access to safe, affordable housing," said Mayor Miller. "His leadership has helped transform neighborhoods, create opportunities, and improve lives. We're grateful for his decades of service and proud to recognize everything he's done for Macon-Bibb County."

The proclamation also recognizes Austin's integrity, work ethic, and commitment to the people served by the Macon Housing Authority, as well as the respect he has earned from colleagues, community partners, and the Authority's Board of Commissioners.

Congratulations to Mike Austin, and thank you for nearly 30 years of service to Macon-Bibb County!

Through hands-on learning and educational opportunities, 4-H encourages students to explore agriculture, science, civic engagement, leadership, and health and wellness.

"Young people are our greatest natural resource, and programs like 4-H help give them the tools and confidence they need to succeed," said Mayor Miller. "We're proud to recognize the students, volunteers, and leaders who make this program such an important part of our community."

The proclamation also recognizes the dedicated adult volunteers, advisors, and mentors who give their time and talents to support local youth. Their commitment helps create opportunities for students to learn new skills, build relationships, and prepare for the future.

Macon-Bibb County encourages young people and adults to get involved in local 4-H programs offered through the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension.

Planning and Zoning seeking community input

The Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission (MBPZ) has announced additional dates for community workshops focusing on land use as part of the comprehensive plan, “Macon It Happen.” The last workshop is Thursday, October 15, at Bibb Mt. Zion Baptist Church (Gymnasium), (3268 Avondale Mill Road, Macon) from 6:00pm-8:00pm.

All land use community meetings will include a brief presentation of the comprehensive plan, the planning process, results from engagements so far, and potential land use policy approaches. The meeting will also have interactive, hands-on activities designed to gather high-level input on how each area of the county should grow and develop in the future. MBPZ staff and the consultant team will be available throughout the evening to answer questions, discuss ideas, and collect feedback.

“We’re interested in hearing what each community in the County envisions for their future,” said Gregory Brown, Planning Director for MBPZ. “This will help inform where we prioritize new development and redevelopment, and how we’ll do it. ”

“Macon It Happen” is Macon-Bibb County’s comprehensive plan that lays out how the community will grow, connect, and invest through the year 2055, with a special focus on the next five years. In addition to land use and zoning, it also looks at transportation, economic development, housing, and quality of life.
