VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
Barbara Miller

Barbara Miller was part of a vision in 2012 when she and Greg Magee started planning the gardens at the Visitor Information Center (VIC). While that vision morphed over the years, it was always about visitors experiencing native plants and educating them about the myriad species that flourish in Cave Creek Canyon such as penstemon, columbine, foxglove, and monkey flowers.

Botanizing the canyon for years, Barbara  put into practice all she saw and learned when she established the wild mea dow combining wildflowers and grasses to attract butterflies and other insects. There are three other smaller gardens nearby that she also planted. And in between planting, watering, raking, and weeding, she found time to write th e chapter on "Wildflower Walks" in the  Cave  Creek Canyon  book (2014).

One of the early frustrations Barbara and the volunteers experienced was the elimination of Bermuda grass. It appeared after the soil was turned over in preparation for planting the meadow. Once watered, that and other non-native grasses began flourishing. During these early years we all knew where we could find Barbara-on her hands and knees weeding one of the gardens.

A member of the Arizona Native Plant Society for decades, Barbara freely shares her knowledge about local plant species and their habitats. With her walking companion, Dinah Davidson, they spend many hours botanizing and observing plants. They alerted FOCCC to the white sweet clover ( Melilotus alba ) infestation along the creek after Hurricane Odile in 2014 and more recently the dallisgrass ( Paspalum dilatatum ) outbreak above the Southwestern Research Station probably introduced in hay for horses. In both instances, FOCCC volunteers worked to eradicate the offenders. In the case of dallisgrass, the Forest Service and the Research Station were alerted and are willing to assist in its eradication.

Whenever I would compliment Barb on her efforts and colorful gardens, she would immediately reply, "Well, you know, it's a work in progress." And she means it-only now she is enjoying watching others weed and care for the plants she nurtured for six years. She has made a difference by beautifying the landscape around the VIC in addition to educating visitors about native plants. We thank you, Barbara, for your vision and dedication.
