A Celebration in King William
On Thursday, June 22 at 9 am, we gathered with Ms. Russ to 'break ground' and celebrate the beginning of construction on her new home. The foundation was already in place so construction started immediately after the ceremony! We were thankful to have her family, friends, church members, volunteers, members of the community, and even some chickens in attendance. See some pictures from the ceremony online.

We have finished our Dewey Street Renovation project! This property was a renovation of a fire-damaged house in Ashland. Ivy and her family have purchased this 3-bed, 1-bath home; now it's time to start moving! Ivy was concerned about her previous living conditions because of violence in the neighborhood. We hope this property will give her family a safe and secure home and a sense of peace! Celebrate this milestone with Ivy at a home dedication on July 7th at noon!

Historic Watch
Habitat unearthed an engraved 100-year-old pendant watch at the site of our 78th home and through the help of the Ashland Museum, tracked down the descendants of the original owners. On Tuesday, July 11th, at 6 pm, we will have a ceremony at the site – 510 Wesley Street in Ashland – to return the watch to the original owners' family and share more about this fascinating discovery. Construction on our King William lot has begun!
Are you skilled or semi-skilled in construction? We are seeking weekly volunteers to help us stay on schedule. Additionally, we are seeking licensed subcontractors who specialize in roof systems, HVAC, plumbing, drywall installation & painting to take on these projects and help keep our builds affordable. We agree with Ms. Stevens, who was quoted in the RTD article last month saying, ‘I wonder how a young family is going to afford a place here.’ We know that living in Hanover is already out of reach for many people who grew up here or work in the county. Hanover County's median home sold price in March 2023 was $405,000. The lack of affordable housing leaves the average working family out of the housing market in Hanover. To afford a home at $405,000 and not be cost-burdened, a household income must be at least $127,000. Senior citizens are staying in their longtime home instead of downsizing because there is nowhere for them to go that they can afford. Habitat sees how overwhelming it is for them to try to maintain these homes that they’ve lived in for 40-50 years but can’t afford to leave.
There must be changes in local policies as well as community and developer buy-in to create necessary affordable housing options. Please engage in the comprehensive planning process and encourage the planning commission and board of supervisors to make affordable housing a priority.

Since the Envision Hanover planning process began in the Fall of 2021, the public has been asked to provide ideas and input on a variety of different topics related to the County’s long-range growth and development. As it nears the final round of its community engagement, they have the following in-person public meetings:
- Monday, July 10: Rockville Library
- Tuesday, July 11: Atlee Library
- Thursday, July 13: Mechanicsville Library
- Monday, July 17: Ashland Library
Each of these meetings is scheduled for 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Please consider participating and advocating for affordable housing. Visit www.envisionhanover.com for more on the Comprehensive Plan Update.

Hanover and King William Habitat for Humanity will develop 1.5 acres in Ashland at the corner of South Taylor Street and Arlington Street into a five-lot affordable home development. Habitat affectionately calls it their STAR project, short for S. Taylor and Arlington streets.
This project will cost approximately $1.6 million to develop five affordable homes due to the infrastructure costs, street-level work, and the cost of home construction. To date, we have raised $862,000. We still need to raise $738,000 to make this project a reality.
