January 2019 at Place des Arts
Home to our arts community
Happy New Year, loyal readers! Have you set any goals for the coming year? My goal is to explore more - explore learning opportunities, explore the globe through a bit of travel and explore my own creativity!

We have lots of ways for you to explore at Place des Arts this month: Learn about Scottish culture at our 7th annual Celebration of Robbie Burns; dive into the visual arts with your family at our January 20 Family Day at PdA; or learn new skills and techniques in one of our many visual, literary or performing arts classes.

We wish you and yours all the best for 2019 and hope you find joy in exploring whatever strikes a chord for you!

Annual Burns Celebration Gets a Facelift
Mark your calendars for our Celebration of Robbie Burns on Saturday, January 20, and read on to discover what's new for this year's event!

Since its inception seven years ago, our popular A Celebration of Robbie Burns has included a sit-down Scottish-inspired supper.

To freshen things up this year, the event will start earlier at 5:30pm with a casual small-plates buffet, a cornucopia of tastes and flavours inspired by the cuisine of Scotland, and will wind up with a post-concert meet, greet and sip with the band.

In between, the celebration remains the same as in previous years, with Celtic band Blackthorn starting their lively concert at 7:00pm, host Edward Mornin recounting stories of Burns and reciting Burn's Address to a Haggis, Matt Dolan "piping in the haggis" and a cash bar serving wine, beer and, of course, scotch whisky!

Tickets at brownpapertickets.com
Buffet and Concert (all ages): $41 | Concert Only: Adults $21; Students $16 (+GST)

What to do on those dark, rainy days of winter? Come to Place des Arts and let the colour of creativity shed some light, of course!

Dance is a super fun way to chase the winter blues away, and we offer adult dance classes in a variety of styles like hip hop, jazz, ballet and tap. We even have a dance class specifically for people living with Parkinson's disease.

For those more musically inclined, how about building your guitar skills in our Basic Jazz Guitar for Adults? Or for the cellists out there, did you know we have a cello ensemble you can join? Find all our music classes here.

Participating in the visual arts is also a great conduit to happiness during the dark, cold months of winter. Check out our wide variety of visual arts classes like Basic Acrylic Painting, Oil Painting for Beginners, Yarn Spinning and more, and brighten up your days through art. Meet Claire - Our New(ish) Registration Clerk!
Have you met Claire at the registration desk yet? Claire is one of our newer registration clerks, so we thought we'd share her story, so you can learn a little bit about the woman behind the smile.

Claire has been working behind the registration desk since May 2018, and she's a wonderful addition to the team.

Considering she was thrown into the figurative fire, starting as she did with the rush of registration for our 2018/2019 season, Claire always manages to maintain a positive and welcoming demeanor while helping clients navigate the registration process.
