CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL PTSA'S ONLINE NEWSLETTER

Preparing Next Year's Class Schedules

(an update from Assistant Principal and Master Scheduler Ms. Miley)

Scheduling for the 2015-2016 school year has begun. There are multiple in-house steps that will occur to ensure that students are placed in the correct courses for next school year. During February students were able to sign up for elective courses that they were interested in taking, sign up for AP courses, and our teachers at Centennial went through the recommendation process for the courses that students academically need to take next year. Placement guidelines from the county are followed to ensure proper placement. Students will be given at least 2 rounds of course verifications to ensure that they, as well as their parents, can look over the recommended courses that are needed as well as desired.

The first round of course verifications is for students to ensure that they have picked electives and seen the courses that the teachers have recommended for them. Our counseling staff will work hard to make changes and fixes based on teacher recommendations and student needs. Once the clean-up phase is complete, we will be issuing another round of course verifications to students. This form will be taken home and signed off on by the parent.

Our last step will be to create the master schedule and work as a team with-in the building to ensure students return in August with complete schedules ready to go!

Centennial Wins 2nd $100K+ Seed Fund Award

Centennial is proud to announce that we have been awarded $112,000 to expand the 21st Century learning environment pioneered in our Learning Commons. We are converting two of our traditional computer labs into "CoLabs" or collaboration labs. These spaces will give our students even more exciting and forward-looking learning opportunities by providing them with collaborative furniture, software, and technology that will challenge both our students and teachers to explore new options for education. One lab will be used for STEM, science, technology, engineering, and math, courses with high speed cameras, experimental equipment and software geared for those fields. The other will focus on our humanities classes, focusing on creation tools, like green screens, sound and video recording equipment and editing software, giving our students the ability to create as well as learn.

We would like to give a big thanks to Ms. Crumbley, Scott Kent, our SGC Chair, Karen LeCates, and our SGC team for their work initiative. Our SGC engaged Brad Davis and Hilary Cassidy on the work for the STEM lab concept, and Julia Faile and Chad Hoge on the work for the Humanities lab - they in turn, gathered information from many department members with regards to what we could "grow" if we had the Seed Fund resources for our computer labs - so once again this has truly been a team effort.

Meet Centennial's New Head Football Coach

Lenny Gregory

My name is Lenny Gregory, and I live in Loganville, Georgia. I am married to Kathy Gregory, and together we have 6 children.  My oldest is my daughter Gabby (21), followed by my three sons Hayden (18), Jacob (16), and Max (2). Additionally, I have two step children, Savannah (12), and James (10).  I am originally from Santa Rosa, CA- Bay Area. I attended Brigham Young University on a football scholarship from 1989-1993. As a player for BYU, I was a four year letterman, and started 39 straight games on the defensive line from 1991-1993. In 1991 and 1993 I was named on the second team all-Western Athletic Conference team, and in 1992 was named on the first team all-conference team.

After graduation I moved to West Virginia where I began a career in the hardwood lumber industry.  I was involved in that industry as a business owner & in sales for 13 years. I relocated to the Atlanta, GA area in 1999.  At that time I had the opportunity to enter into the football world again as a coach.  Since then I have been coaching varsity high school football for the past 12 years and working in education as a special education teacher.

My opportunity as an educator was at Chattahoochee high school where I was the Varsity Defensive Line coach & Head Boys Golf coach. In 2008 I moved to Grayson high school, where I spent 5 years at coaching the defensive line, and the past two years as the defensive coordinator. During the past 7 seasons at Grayson our teams had a record of 76 wins and 16 losses. During the 2011 season we were blessed to go 15-0 and win the Georgia 5A State Title. Grayson received several national ranking as high as #1 in the nation, and in 2011 finished in the top 5 in every national poll.

Football is great, but more than anything I love working with kids and helping them realize their full potential. I am living my dream and loving life. I could not imagine why anyone would want to do anything else besides teach and coach high school kids. It is my honor and privilege to serve as your new Head Football Coach.  I am so grateful for the opportunity to take over an incredible opportunity with so much potential.  I am committed to building a program of excellence in everything we do.  It is my belief that Centennial has the resources with outstanding student athletes and great community pride that will allow me to install a championship football program.

CENTENNIAL WELCOMES YOU, COACH GREGORY!  GO KNIGHTS!!

Remember to Use your Publix Scan Cards!

Do you know that the CHS PTSA has received over $14,000 from Publix over the years?!  That is a lot of money - and it takes no effort at all.  Just use your scan card every time that you make a purchase at Publix.  If you do not have a scan card, you can get one at the front desk.  They are available throughout the school year.  You or your student can pick up extra cards for grandparents, friends and neighbors to use.  Everyone buys groceries, and having these cards scanned when you shop at Publix is an easy way to help CHS PTSA!

Check out the Fundraising Tab on the PTSA website ( www.centptsa.org ) to see all of the current fundraisers at Centennial.  Please support our fellow Knights!
