Juniors and their Parents  and Guardians

Here is a Glimpse of what is Coming Up Next Year!

The next school year is a big one for the class of 2016.  Some of it can seem a bit overwhelming at the start of the year, so here are a few items to be aware of:

  • Senior Portraits - you will start to get info in the mail from Peachtree Portraits almost immediately after school ends this week.  You should set up a sitting time as soon as you can (in the summer).  These are the senior pictures that are used in next year's yearbook.  They take both yearbook and casual pictures.  These sittings take place at the school and are notoriously behind schedule - there is a lot of waiting around.  The student wears the outfit that they want their casual shots to be taken in - some people choose to bring multiple outfits.  Some students also choose to bring a "prop" like a lacrosse stick, football, etc.  The sample pic showed someone with a horse!!  The sitting fee is around $35.  You will order your packages (if you choose to) after you get your pictures back and they are pretty costly.
  • Senior Dues - These are fees that pay for the various senior activities that happen throughout the year.  They are around $35 and due in the fall.
  • College Applications - The fall is going to be a blur of finishing standardized tests and preparing college applications.  Take time this summer to prepare.  Most colleges post their 2016-2017 applications during the summer, around August.  Get your summer homework done early so that you can start working on applications when they come out.  At a minimum, begin to organize your ideas for your college essays.  Common App - a common application that is used by many colleges, including GA Tech - is available 8/1/15.
  • Other senior expenses throughout the year include:
    • Cap and gown - $95 (November)
    • Project Graduation - $70 (April) - Lock in on graduation night
    • Yard sign - $25 (April)

The FFA would like to thank everyone who supported the arts at Centennial this year.  From those of you who joined the Fine Art Association as members, everyone who attended concerts, theater productions, football games, and Celebration of the Arts, to those who attended Village Burger Spirit nights, we express our heartfelt gratitude.

This year, the Fine Arts department has delighted the CHS community with 12 concerts and 5 theater productions, including the Spring musical Addams Family, which included students from all the fine arts disciplines.  We capped off the year with Celebration of the Arts, which showcased amazing work from visual arts, chorus, orchestra and band.

Through your generosity, the FFA has been able to provide support to the fine arts faculty and students at Centennial.  We have furnished a piano for chorus, stage microphones, and lights for music stands this year.  FFA has also awarded $500 scholarships to the following outstanding seniors: Amanda Hamilton, Jenna LeCates, Debbie Lowder, Noah Rickles, Joel Terning, Rachel Thomson. Congratulations to all!

If you would like to support the arts at Centennial, please consider joining the FFA board.  We are specifically in need of a Treasurer, a Membership Chair and a Fundraising Chair for next year.  Please visit our web site at chsffa.org or contact Cheryl Rowlands at bellacourte@att.net.

PTSA Reflections

"Let Your Imagination Fly"

The CHS PTSA Reflections program kicks off in early September, and all students are invited to start thinking about ideas for entries based on this year's theme: "Let Your Imagination Fly."     Reflections is a great tool to unleash your artistic talents in six different categories: Photography, Dance Choreography, Visual Arts, Musical Composition, Film/Video Production, and Literature. Student entries are judged at the school level.  The winners advance to the North Fulton County level and then to the state level. Students whose entries win at the school level are recognized on Honors Night. Use the summer to start your work.   Multiple entries are encouraged.  The deadline for entries will be mid October and the exact date will be announced once school starts.   To gather more information please contact Richard Raeside at rraeside@comcast.net or 770-641-6252.  The Centennial PTSA will have updated information once school starts.

MS Walk

On Saturday, May 9, 2015, over 30 Centennial students, friends and family gathered at Centennial High School to Walk for MS, a nationwide effort to support medical research for multiple sclerosis.  The event was initiated, organized and run by two Centennial juniors, Adrienne Parks and Elika Upadhyay.  When Adrienne and Elika learned of a close friend's MS diagnosis, it motivated them to want to do  something meaningful in honor of their friend.

They raised money and support to fund the Walk by soliciting local area businesses. Sponsors included Fresh Market, Brooklyn Bagels, Kroger, Senor Patron, Firehouse Sub, Village Burger and KPPB Law Firm. Their efforts resulted in raising over $500.00 toward the MS cause.

New Council Members Elected!

Centennial High School elected 2 parents and one teacher to serve on the Centennial High School School Governance Council for the next two years.

Remember to Use your Publix Scan Cards!

Do you know that the CHS PTSA has received over $14,000 from Publix over the years?!  That is a lot of money - and it takes no effort at all.  Just use your scan card every time that you make a purchase at Publix.  If you do not have a scan card, you can get one at the front desk.  They are available throughout the school year.  You or your student can pick up extra cards for grandparents, friends and neighbors to use.  Everyone buys groceries, and having these cards scanned when you shop at Publix is an easy way to help CHS PTSA!

Check out the Fundraising Tab on the PTSA website ( www.centptsa.org ) to see all of the current fundraisers at Centennial.  Please support our fellow Knights!
