Centennial celebration: American Legion, Auxiliary mark 100th anniversary
The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary is celebrating their 100th anniversary this month. After being founded in March of 1919 in Paris, France and then being chartered and incorporated by Congress in September, the first Legion convention convened in Minneapolis Nov. 10-12, 1919, at which time they adopted their Constitution. The American Legion’s purpose is for veterans to help other veterans as well as mentor youth, sponsor community programs and advocate patriotism. The American Legion Auxiliary serves the same purpose, giving the family of service members an opportunity to be supportive of veterans through acts of volunteerism, fundraising and event organizing.
