Thank You for an Incredible

Adopt-a-Palooza!

We’ve officially wrapped up Adopt-a-Palooza 2025, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the outpouring of support we received throughout July.

Thanks to your generosity, we welcomed 93 brand-new adoptions and received over 35 renewals from past Adopt-a-Palooza supporters. That’s more than 100 acts of kindness that directly help provide specialized care, healthy diets, enrichment activities, and beautiful, natural habitats for the orangutans and chimpanzees at our sanctuary.

We were especially delighted to see who came out on top this year…

Our three most adopted apes were:

  • Orangutan Geri
  • Orangutan BamBam
  • And, tying it up with the orangutans, chimpanzee Maggie!
Maggie

Maggie’s popularity this year had us grinning ear to ear. This determined and clever chimpanzee has a talent for winning people over with her confident demeanor and thoughtful gaze. She's known for pointing to different spots in her habitat just to see if her caregivers will follow her directions. It's one of her favorite games that she could play all day long. Clearly, Maggie made quite the impression!

To each and every one of you who symbolically adopted an ape this July: thank you. Your support helps us carry out our mission of providing lifetime care for orangutans and chimpanzees in need.

Keeping Cool Under a Heat Dome

As temperatures across Florida and much of the country soar under the intense grip of a summer heat dome, we’re all feeling the effects of this unrelenting heat, and so are the orangutans and chimpanzees at the Center for Great Apes.

With consecutive days well into the 90s and heat indexes pushing past 105°, providing relief and comfort for our residents has become more important than ever. While these apes are native to warm and tropical climates, many of them, like our older orangutans and chimpanzees, are more vulnerable to the health risks that come with extreme heat, especially when combined with age-related challenges.

That’s why our caregivers are working tirelessly to ensure every ape has access to the shade, hydration, and cooling options they need. Nighthouses are equipped with circulating fans and overhead misters. We offer frequent frozen treats like “fruitcicles” and icy enrichment tubs filled with cool water and toys. Shade cloths have been added to trailways and habitats. And we monitor each individual daily for any signs of heat-related stress.

One of the apes who especially appreciates these comforts is Popi, our beloved 54-year-old orangutan and one of the oldest residents at the sanctuary. Popi relaxes in front of her fan while she enjoys an ice treat. Her caregivers know just how to make her feel comfortable, and in this weather, that means extra effort, extra monitoring, and yes… extra electricity.

Our summer appeal is dedicated to ensuring apes like Popi stay cool, comfortable, and well-cared for during this challenging season. And while our team handles the day-to-day work, we rely on the generosity of our friends to help keep the power running, the fans blowing, and the ice machines stocked.

If you'd like to help bring some cooling comfort to Popi and her friends during this summer heat wave, your support will go directly to work.

Thank you for helping us keep our residents safe, cared for, and cool… even when the Florida heat doesn’t take time off.

Orangutan Air-B-and-B: Taking Enrichment to New Heights

Did you know the Center for Great Apes has more than two miles of aerial trailways winding through our sanctuary? These innovative “highways in the sky” don’t just connect habitats, they connect friendships, enrich lives, and open up a world of exploration for our orangutan residents.

The trailways on the orangutan side of the sanctuary allow us to offer our red-haired friends a kind of vacation getaway, affectionately nicknamed the “Orangutan Air-B-and-B” by our care team. Each orangutan takes a turn spending time in a different habitat, where they can enjoy new views, new neighbors, and new enrichment opportunities. Some stays last just a few days, others stretch into a couple of weeks; it all depends on who’s visiting and how much fun they’re having!

Currently, Mari is enjoying a stay at the O1 habitat, which is toward the front of the sanctuary near our main office. It’s a peaceful spot with lots of tree cover, perfect for quiet naps and keeping an eye on the day’s comings and goings. Meanwhile, BamBam and Tango have settled into the O2 habitat, on the far side of the sanctuary. We added two extra bedrooms to O2 last year, making it a cozy retreat for a pair of playful pals.

These habitat “swaps” aren’t just about scenery; they're carefully planned to support each orangutan’s social life and emotional well-being. It’s an opportunity to reconnect with old friends or gently introduce new ones, all while giving everyone a fresh space to explore. The movement itself, traveling via trailway, is a thrill and enrichment experience all its own!

Whether they’re traveling solo or with a companion, the orangutans seem to enjoy the change of pace, and our team loves watching them make the most of their sanctuary vacation getaways.

Honoring Our Redheaded Great Apes

Sandra

Every year on August 19th, International Orangutan Day shines a much-needed spotlight on one of the world’s most intelligent and endangered species. With their striking red hair, soulful eyes, and deeply expressive personalities, orangutans capture hearts and imaginations. But beyond their charm lies a sobering truth: orangutans are in crisis.

As their native habitats in Borneo and Sumatra continue to shrink due to deforestation, palm oil plantations, and illegal wildlife trade, the importance of sanctuaries like the Center for Great Apes becomes even more vital. While the apes in our care cannot be returned to the wild due to their human-raised histories, they deserve and receive a safe, enriching, and compassionate home for life.

Recognizing International Orangutan Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate the unique intelligence, emotional depth, and social complexity of orangutans. It's also a moment to reflect on our responsibility to protect them, both in the wild and in sanctuaries like ours.

To mark the occasion, the Center for Great Apes is hosting a special International Orangutan Day event at the sanctuary on Tuesday, August 19th. This guided tour offers orangutan enthusiasts a rare opportunity to walk through the sanctuary and meet many of the amazing orangutan residents who call CGA home.

Guests will hear stories from our dedicated caregivers, learn about the individual personalities and friendships among the apes, and gain insight into the specialized care they receive. The tour also includes an “Orangutan Talk” with our Ape Care Supervisor, plus the chance to browse limited-edition orangutan art and exclusive CGA merchandise.

Date: Tuesday, August 19

Tour Times: 10:00 AM or 11:00 AM

Cost: $50 per person

Ages: 15 and up

Note: Participants should be comfortable walking and standing for about one mile. Please contact us in advance with any mobility concerns.
