Center Spotlights

Food Is Medicine in Texas


Food is Medicine as a concept has been gaining momentum as an effective approach for healthcare systems to mitigate and treat chronic disease and improve overall health for their patients. 


At the Center for Health Equity, we are excited to announce the launch of our Design, Measurement and Evaluation Core to support the Food Is Medicine movement locally and nationally.

Assistant Professor Awarded

NIH K01 Grant


Department of Epidemiology, Human Genetics, and Environmental Sciences Assistant Professor Jemima John, PhD, has been awarded a $388,000 NIH K01 grant to utilize a systems-level perspective to examine the impact of a patient-informed Medical-Legal Partnership intervention on health-harming legal needs in pediatric families enrolled across UT Physicians clinics.

Heidi Hagen McPherson, MPH, recognized for community advocacy


Heidi Hagen McPherson, MPH was awarded The Network of Behavioral Health Providers (NBPH) Program Champion for the Harris County Pathways Community HUB in recognition of her work with community stakeholders to improve care coordination. Since 2019, McPherson has collaborated with NBHP advising their Harris County Pathways Community HUB initiative.

Center for Health Equity Launches Produce Rx Program to Improve High-Risk Pregnancy Outcomes


This fall, the Center will introduce the initiative “Produce Rx in High-Risk Pregnant Mothers at Harris Health,” which will provide pregnant mothers with a Produce Prescription Program (FoodRx) to analyze the impact of healthy food on gestational weight gain, birth outcomes, and improve care for low-income mothers in Harris County.

Center for Health Equity Practicum Reflection: Wes Gibson, MPH Student


MPH student Wes Gibson was inspired to pursue his MPH in Health Services Organization at UTHealth Houston School of Public Health by his work with the Health Equity Collective and the Houston Food Bank's Food for Change initiative. This work led him to completing his MPH practicum with the Center for Health Equity.
