Spring 2026 Newsletter

Dear Colleagues,

Dear colleagues, happy spring! The big news is that we’re offering MABT Level 1 training in Europe in October. This will be a retreat intensive at a lovely country venue near Assisi in central Italy – come join us and/or share this information with others who might like to attend!

Other good news: the number of certified MABT-trained practitioners is growing! We had a record number of students complete advanced/certificate level training in the past year.

We are also having more practitioners attend MABT trainings who work within clinics and hospitals – meaning that integrative care is growing and that MABT will increasingly reach underserved and highly distressed populations seeking care for a variety of health conditions. MABT research highlights improved and sustained interoceptive skills for nervous system regulation among those who learn this approach. The importance of this for increased well-being on individual and societal levels can’t be underestimated – especially at this time with extraordinarily high levels of mental health distress among adolescents, isolation and loneliness among people of all ages, the continued disconnect between body/mind for many with chronic physical conditions who could benefit from more tools to manage their health symptoms and promote well-being.

See our news updates and training announcement below!

  • Title: Spiritual Experience during MABT is a Predictor of Increased Interoceptive Awareness

  • Description: This presentation will describe responses on a measure of spiritual experience and how higher levels of spiritual experience predicted greater increases in interoceptive awareness among individuals who received MABT as an adjunct to medication for opioid use disorder in a large NIH-funded trial. Cynthia Price and Megan Sherman will present the clinical and research implications, and how these findings are enhanced by a prior qualitative project exploring personalized spiritual experience in the MABT process. Come with your thoughts and ideas for discussion!

  • When: Wednesday June 24th @ 5:00pm pacific time. Note: recording will be sent out to any who request it.

MABT-Related News

  • At the AMTA convention in August 2026 in Denver, results of a study of somatic awareness in massage therapy for refugee survivors of war trauma – involving elements of MABT – will be presented 3:30-5:30 on Thursday 8/27. If you’re going to the convention – check it out!

  • Cynthia was invited to provide staff training at New Traditions, a women's community substance use disorder treatment center to learn body awareness skills to enhance awareness and resilience. New Traditions collaborated on a past study of MABT as an adjunct to treatment and it was a rewarding experience to return there in this new capacity.

  • Cynthia is consulting on a study (PI Anthony Back, MD at the University of WA) to modify a psylocibin retreat intervention with more support and focus on somatic awareness for those with cancer and elevated mental health distress.

MABT Level 2:

If you’ve attended a Level 1 course and have yet to engage in Level 2 (a mentoring/practice class offered remotely) and want to do so, please email to discuss. This is a prerequisite for certification.
